Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Launched in 2013, the Department of Applied Physical Sciences ( APS) is the first new science department in the College of Arts and Sciences in nearly 40 years. Applied Physical Sciences has united numerous scientific entities on campus to further its mission of finding interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems. Its newest endeavor, BeAM (Be A Maker), is a university-wide initiative that incorporates Making into research, education, and entrepreneurship. BeAM is comprised of several spaces, including a makerspace in Hanes Art Center, Carmichael Residence Hall, and a 3,400 square foot Makerspace in Murray Hall, all of which serve the entire UNC community.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for conducting research in Biomolecular Materials Engineering as a part of the Freeman Lab in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD degree or Postdoctoral experience in Biomaterials Engineering or related fields.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
PHD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or in Biophysics/Structural-Biology or similar. Experience with writing and publishing scientific manuscripts.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Preference given to those with experience in peptide self-assembly and working with stimuli-responsive materials. Strong track record of well-organized study design and implementation. Ability to work independently and across multi-disciplinary teams. A team player, clear communicator, with a strong work ethic. These are desirable but if you don't have all, we can teach you! - Familiarity with optical/fluorescent microscopy - Experience with synthesis and characterization of structural biomaterials, peptide-polymer conjugates, and hydrogels - Experience with recombinant protein engineering, liquid- liquid phase separation and hyper-soluble polypeptides. - Experience with flow cytometry, ELISAs, PCR, or confocal microscopy.
