This role will focus on bringing new employers to JMU, with a special focus on employers in Virginia. Duties and Responsibilities: 50% Collaboration & Outreach:
- Develop relationships with faculty, staff, employers, and alumni with the common goal of increasing access to career-related networks for all students, regardless of background or social capital.
- Proactively identify and address gaps in internship and full-time opportunities in Virginia (i.e., industry, job function or geographic area) where student interest is greater than the existing network.
- Work with various task forces on campus to reach employer outreach goals.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings, contributing to discussions and decision making in a professional manner.
- Show collegial courtesy by responding to requests in a timely manner.
- Increase number of employers in specific target areas
- Work to build more connections with employers that are looking to hire JMU students for interns.
- Bringing Virginia employers and JMU students together to create partnerships.
- Partner with other members of the Employer Services Team and the overall University Career Center to streamline employer recruiting efforts.
25% Event & Program Management:
- Coordinate employer events that bring students and Virginia employers together to encourage networking, idea sharing, and knowledge transfer.
- Serve on career fair team that oversees the planning and coordination of 10 career fairs annually.
- Work with Communications Coordinator to develop marketing strategy to include communication with employers, students, faculty and staff.
- Assist with career fairs and other employer facing events that bring employers and students together.
- Assist with the coordination of the Madison Micros micro internship program including employer and student recruitment, program management and selection process.
- Host employer information sessions for the program.
- Assist with the administration of the Unpaid Internship Scholarship including answering student and parent questions and working with the selection and notification process for applicants.
10% Handshake Administration:
- Utilize Handshake to see where employer gaps exist.
- Assist with Handshake usage data collection and reporting, including reports on students and employers using our services, as well as prospective reports on employers we want to connect with.
- Approve employer events and interview schedules as needed.
- Keep accurate notes in Handshake on employer activities with JMU.
10% Curricular Alignment:
- Develop partnerships between Virginia employers, alumni and faculty to inspire curricular connections to career paths, industries, job roles, and career preparation, especially in academic areas that are not currently utilizing the UCC in high numbers.
- Collaborate and support Career Advisor/Liaisons on techniques and strategies for developing new employer relationships and coordinate their efforts to do so.
- Collaborate and consult with career advisors serving as liaisons to academic units to ensure information about opportunities between employer services and the liaisons are coordinated and well publicized.
- Work with UCC team to create new partnerships with employers and faculty as well as other campus partners
5% Professional Development:
- Stay current on workforce trends, issues related to recruiting entry level talent, higher education, career-related and industry trends, and student development theory through research, conferences, articles, webinars and collaboration with peers in the field.
- Remain current in workforce trends and economic outlook for new hires and interns, especially in Virginia.
Qualifications: Required:
- Experience analyzing job market trends for new hires and college students, especially in Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley.
- Ability to build connections with employers, faculty, and campus partners.
- Attention to detail, follow-through, and patience are key for this role.
- Communication skills both oral and written and record keeping ability are key.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience working with employers in a higher education setting.
- Event planning experience, computer skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people with varying levels of knowledge about the college recruiting process.
