Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $40.53/hr to $88.53/hr*. Position Summary

The Administrative Nurse I is responsible for overseeing patient care, coordinating unit activities, and managing personnel during assigned shifts. This role utilizes the Nursing Process and the Relationship-Based Care model to ensure high-quality patient care and efficient workflow. By building therapeutic relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and themselves, the Administrative Nurse I serves as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, delivering quality care while achieving unit and organizational goals. The role also requires adherence to the mission, vision, and goals of the Specialty Care Building (SCB).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • On specified units, provides direct patient care (modified assignment); demonstrating clinical knowledge, skills, and expertise.

  • Makes patient care assignment and changes assignment as required according to the patient's/unit's needs

  • Reviews staff schedules utilizing the electronic scheduling tool.

  • Coordinates staff breaks/lunches to ensure continuity of patient care.

  • Directs workflow to facilitate timely patient care.

  • Acts as a resource for unit personnel and aids in resolving questions related to policy, standards, and procedures

  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, conflict management, and customer service skills in serving as a role model and problem solver for the organization and unit.

  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.

  • Recognizes and responds to patient care issues, providing direction, feedback, and follow-up to staff, manager, and other healthcare team members.

  • Contributes feedback to the performance evaluation of unit personnel.

  • Procures necessary clinical supplies and equipment. Follows up on repairs/maintenance of equipment as needed.

  • Builds collaborative relationships with physicians to promote teamwork.

  • Maintains overall knowledge of all patients' status in order to assist nursing and medical team members.

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Actively engaged in Shared Leadership through membership on a governing council; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

  • In collaboration with the Patient Care Manager/Director/Ambulatory CNCII, assists with unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to staff

  • Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and in UI Health.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient's plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family.

  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.

  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.

  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.

  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient's changing needs.

  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.

  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.

  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies. Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.

  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.

  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.

  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Establishes an in-depth database by assessing the behavioral and physical status of a variety of pre-surgical patient populations, utilizing interviews, observation, and physical examination. Interprets overt and subtle data to determine physiologic or psychosocial risk.

  • Evaluate patients' responses to care based on the effectiveness of nursing interventions in establishing outcomes and consult with the medical staff, care team lead, and nursing supervisor.

  • Recommends changes to the plan of care based on observed variances.

  • Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice.

  • Identifies learning needs of patients and families and teaches by adapting standard information to provide individualized and comprehensive learning.

  • Incorporates discharge/home care planning into the multidisciplinary plan of care.

  • Develops a therapeutic relationship by establishing trust and enabling the patient and family to verbalize the requirements for care comfortably.

  • Supports and enhances the patient's responsibility and self-determination in decision-making concerning health, treatment, and well-being.

  • Competent in all three areas of peri anesthesia- Preop, Phase 1, and Phase 2 recovery areas

  • Observing patients for side effects of anesthesia

  • Monitoring and recording patient vital signs

  • Monitoring patient's level of consciousness throughout sedation recovery

  • Performing post-operative tasks, such as administering medication or changing dressings

  • Checking and updating patient files, charts, and medical records

  • Collaborating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, and other members of the patient's care team

  • Providing comfort and answering questions when patients wake from sedation

  • Educating patients and their families regarding post-surgery care at home

  • Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.

  • Ability to administer a variety of treatments & medications, including all medicines on the crash cart

  • Collaborating with the medical team on post-operative patient care and facilitating timely specialized interventions.

  • Treating pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms of anesthesia.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking by integrating theoretical knowledge and expertise to pose relevant clinical questions when evidence and practice differ.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching interventions and the patient/family's level of understanding.

  • Assess and instruct patient/family before surgery

  • Assure intake of the patient is accurate through chart review, questioning using safe communication tactics outlined in learning modules

  • Assure that operative/informed consents are accurate and signed per policy

  • Initiate orders from physicians

  • Obtain and record vital signs

  • Monitor and accurately document essential signs and ensure the patient meets discharge criteria before moving to next

  • Monitor patients' condition and report changes to the appropriate physicians

  • Assure patient comfort and answer patient questions

  • Other assigned duties that will assist with safety, quality, and efficiency

  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and related unit problems and participates in problem-solving
    and resolution.

    Education/Research
  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote and provide positive learning experiences for staff
    and students

  • Serves as preceptor and resource to other nursing staff and students.

  • Accesses UI Health intranet/Outlook for relevant communication and to review and interpret changes
    in policy, procedure, and other information pertinent to practice

  • Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts conducted on the unit and UI Health.

  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identifying learning needs
    and initiating strategies to meet such needs.

  • Be proactive in a committee or a process improvement project

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    2. One year of RN experience.
    3. Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
    4. Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
    5. Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
    6. Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
    7. Required 5 years experience of PACU Phase I and Phase II
    8. Experience with precepting and orienting
    9. Required BLS/ACLS/PALS Certifications When Applying
    10. PACU Charge Nurse Experience is mandatory
