Job Overview

The Chief of Staff of Public Safety serves as the principal strategic advisor and operational partner to the Vice President for Public Safety. This role provides high-level coordination, project management, and organizational support to advance the University's public safety mission. The Chief of Staff oversees strategic initiatives, facilitates internal and external communications, and ensures alignment of departmental operations with University goals, compliance standards, and community expectations.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning & Operations
  • Support the Vice President in developing and executing the strategic vision for Public Safety.
  • Coordinate cross-functional initiatives and ensure timely follow-through on priorities.
  • Oversee special projects and policy development efforts.

Executive Support & Communications
  • Manage engagements, agendas, priorities, and briefing materials for the Vice President.
  • Serve as a key liaison with University leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  • Draft and review internal and external communications to ensure clarity and consistency.

Organizational Leadership
  • Partner with senior directors and unit leaders to align operations with institutional objectives.
  • Facilitate staff engagement, performance management, and professional development initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, collaboration, and service excellence.

P olicy, Compliance, and Risk Management
  • Ensure departmental policies comply with University regulations, local and federal law, and best practices in campus safety.
  • Monitor emerging issues in higher education safety and provide recommendations to leadership.


Work Interactions

The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Vice President for Public Safety. The role collaborates regularly with University leadership (e.g., Office of the President, Provost, Student Affairs, and Human Resources), senior law enforcement officials, government agencies, and campus partners to foster a safe and inclusive environment.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in public administration, criminal justice, business, student affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible leadership or management experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project management, organizational planning, and executive advising.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills.

Preferred
  • Master's degree in public administration, higher education leadership, or related discipline.
  • Experience in higher education, law enforcement administration, or public safety operations.
  • Familiarity with Clery Act, Title IX, and other higher education compliance frameworks.


Work Mode Designation

This position requires a primarily on-campus presence with flexibility for episodic hybrid arrangements, subject to operational needs.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$135,188.00 - $264,291.85

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
