Overview
Mechanical Engineer II Date: September 9, 2025 Reports to: Cesar Aguilera Summary This team member applies a solid foundation of engineering experience to solving increasingly more difficult assignments, managing multiple priorities, leveraging known resources, doing so with minimal amounts of direct supervision. The types of problems include existing products, new products, and/or as-yet-undeveloped ideas that begin to focus more on system or sub-system solutions rather than component-specific problems. Support existing production products through VAVE and Continuous Improvement efforts. Essential Functions
- With light direction from more senior engineers, designs complete mechanical systems, products or product families of large scope for products ranging from simple products to complex systems to satisfy customer requirements. This work is performed on multifunctional development teams.
- Directs, coordinates, supports and/or audits manufacturing and assembly activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design specifications and customer expectations.
- May provide technical leadership for a project team.
- Research and analyze data such as internal customer product proposals, drawings/specifications, application, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application considering cost, time, and other factors. May delegate related work to Mechanical Designers on the team.
- Predicts test performance based on sound engineering practices. Plans and directs personnel in fabrication of test equipment and develops methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
- May perform hands-on preliminary testing of concepts. Analyzes test data for viability of accuracy and development of products. Participates in and often directs the hands-on assembly or prototyping of engineering concepts and/or Alpha build products.
- Investigates and solves problems that affect scrap, warranty/reliability and product cost for new and/or existing products.
- Practices use of stage gate development methods, engineering tools, and related industry standards.
- Communicates design intent through creation of robust engineering or product specifications and along with the documented spec, provides the necessary guidance to mechanical designers for successful design execution.
Competencies
- Solid mechanical engineering experience; engineers components and systems with little supervisory technical oversight
- Experience and knowledge working with electromechanical types of components and/or subsystems
- With oversight and guidance, develops a basic understanding and working knowledge of appropriate industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Strong working knowledge of drawing detailing and GD&T practices, able to fully detail component drawings with no assistance.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis (TSA). Capable of performing accurate and complete system tolerance stack up analysis assessing accumulated dimension/tolerance variation of multi-component assemblies with minimal engineering oversight.
- Practical working knowledge of stage-gate development processes.
- Strong team player skills and able to work well with others and support internal/external customer needs.
- Understanding of DFM, FMEA, PPAP principles and regulatory compliance (SHRAE, UL, SAE, IMACA)
- <5000 hours experience using SolidWorks or other similar 3D CAD packages
- >500 hours experience using FEA programs (ideally SolidWorks Simulation)
- Demonstrated design engineering familiarity and capable of designing with light senior engineering direction:
- Complex machined parts
- Plastic injection molded parts
- Iron, zinc and aluminum alloy castings
- Sheet metal stampings
- Products/assemblies with consideration for Design for Manufacturability
