The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) serves as the public, environmental, clinical and occupational health laboratory for the State of Wisconsin. This position provides a wide variety of shipping and receiving tasks for the Environmental Health Division at the WSLH's Agriculture Drive location in Madison.
This position coordinates and executes shipping and mail services for a unit including inventory management and distribution, mail and package receipt and delivery, and shipping and/or delivery of packages. A wide range of other duties as needed including water test kit production under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and assist in other areas of support within WSLH.

All work will be done ONSITE. There is NO remote work for this position.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Determines policies and procedures related to mail and package receipt and delivery - 5%

  • Compares identifying information and counts, weighs or measures items outgoing or incoming shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, packing slips, address labels and other records - 25%

  • Utilizes standard machinery and equipment to load, unload, and transport freight and materials - 10%

  • Troubleshoots shipping issues and customer complaints - 5%

  • Oversees incoming and outgoing shipments. Responsible for inventory management and distribution, mail and package receipt and delivery, and shipping and/or delivery of packages and freight - 55%

Compensation:

$21.00/hour minimum (Depending on qualifications)

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate experience operating various computer systems and software.
  • Must have the ability to perform physical labor including heavy lifting, bending, stooping, and other motions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have the ability to manually lift up to 70lbs with assistance (e.g., box of paper, bag of salt, etc.), repeatedly, and to transport heavier loads via a handcart or pallet jack with or without reasonable accommodation(s).
  • Must have the ability to sit, stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of warehouse experience preferred.
  • Self-starter with a willingness to work as part of a team. Demonstrate exceptional verbal communication and possess organizational skills and an attention to detail. Ability to maintain calm demeanor and pleasant attitude in fast paced environment.

Additional Information:


  • Knowledge of safe work practices, including equipment operation and lifting
  • Knowledge of basic data entry skills, inventory principles, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of shipping companies that service the lab and their related procedures (i.e., Federal Express, UPS, DHL, etc.)
  • Knowledge of basic receiving, purchasing procedures and regulations, including dangerous goods and receiving precautions.
  • Knowledge of mail and shipping regulations.
  • Knowledge of and use of effective team, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to operate office equipment.
  • General knowledge of OSHA biohazard safety.
  • Ability to read and follow directions accurately.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance parameters of mail metering equipment.
  • Ability to learn, adapt, and apply new or changing methods, requirements, or priorities and utilize organizational skills to enhance efficiency.
