Job Summary

Participate with the EHS staff members in the support of the chemical safety programs: perform training, shipping of dangerous goods, and facility inspections for compliance with university policies, procedures, regulations and standards to provide for the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Work with faculty, staff and students to correct non-compliance or hazardous conditions when found. Perform industrial hygiene monitoring and assist in emergency responses to chemical spills and laboratory emergencies. This position will interact on a consistent basis with: faculty, students, EHS and Academic Unit Staff, Facilities personnel. This position will typically advise and counsel: Laboratory and Facilities personnel. This position will supervise:

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Conduct routine inspections of exhaust ventilation systems according to set schedule or upon request, to provide for proper performance/safety of lab and shop personnel. Follow up with corrective actions as needed.

Job Duty 2 -
Perform laboratory inspections according to set schedule or upon request, of university facilities, for compliance with chemical safety standards; follow up on corrective action as needed.

Job Duty 3 -
Perform industrial hygiene air monitoring for airborne contaminants in labs and shops and in support of confined space entries by maintenance personnel.

Job Duty 4 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Applied Science, Engineering, Environmental Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience
Three to four years of job related experience

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Asbestos Inspector, DOT-IATA-IMDG Hazardous Materials Shipper knowledge of federal, state, and local chemical safety regulations and consensus standards; knowledge of collecting samples from various environmental media; skill in performing inspections and providing compliance with applicable chemical safety standard

SKILLS
knowledge of chemistry, skill in maintaining records via a computer database; ability to detect problems, report information to appropriate personnel and suggest corrective actions; ability to accept direction from supervisor, work with minimal guidance and cooperatively with other staff members, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
