Job Summary

Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) at UCSF is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Senior Manager, Scientific Publications to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the development of high-quality scientific communications (including scientific manuscripts, presentations, grant applications and project reports), including strategic planning and execution of scientific experiments in conjunction with lab personnel. You will work closely with senior leadership, lead scientists, researchers, and key collaborators to ensure that content is presented clearly, effectively, and in alignment with scientific and QBI's broader institutional goals.

***NOTE: This is a Full-time 1-year Contract role.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $104,700 - $157,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) is an Organized Research Unit at UCSF that seeks transformative results in biomedicine; QBI supports fundamental quantitative research in the biological sciences. QBI fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Motivated by problems of human disease, QBI is committed to investigating fundamental biological mechanisms, because ultimately solutions to many diseases have been revealed by unexpected discoveries in the basic sciences. QBI currently has several center grants focused on different aspects of human health, researching the underlying biology and developing cutting-edge technologies and approaches that allow for effective connections between the discovery research and clinical worlds, enabling novel therapies for disease.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5+ years of experience in scientific writing, scientific project management, strategic planning, or communication in an academic or industry research setting.
  • Hands-on research experience in addition to graduate work in an academic setting.
  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Highly skilled fundraising experience.
  • Strong scientific writing and editing abilities, with a demonstrated track record of publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expertise in designing scientific figures and presentations, with proficiency in tools such as GraphPad, Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint and Keynote.
  • Ability to distill complex scientific concepts into clear, compelling, and accessible formats for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across different teams and functions.
  • Broad scientific expertise as proven by publications in diverse scientific fields; able to provide scientific input to QBI leadership and scientific teams on various programs across infectious disease, cancer, and neuroscience research.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required.
  • Background in systems biology.
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to navigate complex challenges in scientific research and communication.
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • This role requires flexibility and availability, and the candidate must be prepared to: be available for urgent communication with QBI senior team as needed, including on the weekends.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sense of humor non-negotiable. Preferably erring on the side of dry.
