The Rehabilitative Services Aide supports Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists in providing direct and indirect patient care. This role involves working with adult, geriatric, and adolescent patients from diverse backgrounds, with occasional pediatric care after required training. The aide contributes to patient treatment, discharge planning, clerical support, and departmental operations, ensuring high-quality care and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care (Primary)

  • Assist therapists with patient treatment activities under direct supervision.
  • Support therapists with discharge planning.
  • Plan, coordinate, and distribute patient schedules.
  • Transport patients to and from therapy sessions.
  • Maintain accurate patient care records and progress notes.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and staff.
  • Manage time efficiently to balance patient care and clerical duties.

Departmental Support

  • Complete routine departmental tasks (e.g., timecard completion, scheduling).
  • Assist with clerical and reception duties as needed.
  • Maintain, stock, and track rehabilitation equipment.
  • Represent the department with professionalism.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.

Education & Training

  • Participate in staff in-service education and team meetings.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma.
  • Prior clinical experience involving direct patient interaction.
  • CPR certification (current or eligible).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to recognize signs of patient distress.
  • Basic computer skills (word processing and online communication).
  • Strong interpersonal, time management, problem-solving, and self-motivation skills.
  • Flexibility to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in an acute care hospital or inpatient rehabilitation facility.
  • Outpatient experience in sports medicine, orthopedics, or neurology.
  • Experience in an academic medical center.
  • College degree in a related field.
  • Advanced certifications such as ATC, CSCS, or similar.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and rehabilitation equipment (e.g., Alter-G, TRX, treadmills, body weight harness systems).
  • Ability to use Excel.

License/Certification


  • Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR Certification.
