PhilaPort, the Port of Philadelphia as an Accounting Manager. This position gives you the opportunity to oversee daily accounting operations, monitor deadlines, and provide essential support to staff. We are an independent agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania charged with the management, maintenance, marketing, and promotion of port facilities along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, as well as strategic planning throughout the port district. PhilaPort works with its terminal operators to improve its facilities and to market those facilities to prospective port users around the world. Port cargoes and the activities they generate are responsible for thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the Philadelphia area and throughout Pennsylvania.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Accounting Manager, you will be overseeing all daily accounting operations such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash receipts and disbursements, capital asset accounting, payroll, debt service, fixed assets, and variance analysis. Work involves managing the daily activities of team members, monitoring deadlines, and providing support and coaching. You will also have the opportunity to perform accounting research and offer technical guidance, as needed, to ensure the accurate processing of accounting transactions. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Leading the month-end, quarter end, and year-end closing process
  • Reviewing and approving the monthly balance sheet reconciliations and bank reconciliations
  • Researching more complex discrepancies and determining the appropriate course of action
  • Maintaining fixed asset module and accounting software
  • Administering the coordination of internal and external audits and the gathering of required audit information
  • Proactively identifying opportunities for process improvement related to receiving, controlling, validating, recording, and reporting accounting data by reviewing internal controls, performing analysis, and updating procedures
  • Using financial data and reports to provide professional accounting advice for investing, spending, and managing Commonwealth assets
  • Completing special projects and other ad hoc requests

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • 5 flex schedules to choose from. Additional information may be provided during the interview.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, on Friday each week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Philadelphia. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Seven or more years of related financial experience, with at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience with Fund Accounting/Grant

Additional Requirements:

  • You must have a strong understanding of government contract compliance regulations found in US GAAP & GASB knowledge.
  • You must have a strong proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including advanced skills with Excel.
  • You must have the ability to approach problem solving proactively and creatively to execute multiple tasks and adhere to strict deadlines in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • You must have the ability to work collaboratively on a team, and the willingness to be an active and supportive member of a cross-functional team.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience with federal, state, local government, non-profit, or government contracting entity providing services to government clients
