Overview

The Engineering Liaison Office (ELO) is in need of a mechanical designer to work on-site in Newport News, VA to support Design Yard oversight for COLUMBIA Class construction at the Newport News Shipyard (NNS). This position will report to the Mechanical and Piping specific COLUMBIA Class deckplate team.

The chosen candidate will be required to answer various types of Change Requests (CRs) / Change Notices (CNs) for COLUMBIA Class Submarines under construction at Newport News Shipyard (NNS) using NX/Team Center. The position requires occasional shipboard investigations on sub-assembly units and modules under various stages of construction. Candidate will be required to interface with NNS trades, engineering, design, construction foreman and planners while developing timely resolutions in consideration of an aggressive construction schedule. This group is composed of both engineers and designers; therefore there is immediate engineering support in house; however, at times the candidate may be required to interface with the cognizant engineering department in Groton.

Specifically, the designer will be working quick tools to correct design errors or problems that occur during construction to alleviate hold ups and ensure the shipyard can complete work. This position will focus more on numerous short term problems across any portion of the CLB hull that is being constructed by NNS (for example, the Bow, Stern, AMRs). The ability to work well in a team environment and with outside personnel is pivotal to success at this position.
