About the Job

Job Description -
The Center for Metabolomics and Proteomics (CMSP) is seeking applications for the post of Researcher 2 to assist in the area of Proteomic sample preparation and administrative assistance. The successful candidate will work closely with the supervisor to coordinate and execute sample preparation, method development, and administrative duties (ordering and data entry) in a biological mass spectrometry-based core service facility environment. Under direction by the supervisor, this person will perform fundamental research experiments following established procedures. Additionally, this person will be directed on method development that will be used to expand CMSP's existing and future proteomics capabilities, perform routine lab maintenance, sample handling and potentially organize experimental data. This person will be expected to gain an understanding of laboratory operation to assist investigators as needed. Work requires precision and attention to detail. One should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. The candidate must be able to work successfully as part of a team.

Essential and Other Functions:
70% Prepare samples for proteomic analysis in the CMSP facility
With training and direction by the supervisor, use standardized protocols to prepare samples submitted by facility users for proteomic analysis. Other duties as assigned.

10% Assist with administrative operations for the CMSP
Tracking reagent and supply inventory and place orders via UMN UMarket and/or request UMN purchase orders with vendors routinely. Update and maintain File Maker Pro Inventory and Ordering modules, as well as updating billing for services and instruments.

5% Assist in training and educational activities offered by the CMSP
Train facility users on sample prep techniques. Assist in workshops to CMSP users and students as needed.

15% Assist in development and validation of new sample preparation methods
Under direction by the supervisor, carry out testing and validation of new methods for preparing samples.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field, or a combination or education and work experience to equal four (4) years. Experience in routine laboratory activities such as making buffers, following written SOP's, pipetting skills. Must have attention to detail and careful record keeping in laboratory notebook and/or other formats for tracking samples and ensuring high quality results from sample preparation. Must be able to work within a collaborative setting, interfacing with other staff members and users of the facility. Excellent general computer skills are necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of proteomic sample preparation for mass spectrometry, such as in-solution and in-gel proteolytic digestion, and peptide/protein purification methods, solid phase extraction (SPE) (e.g. C18 SPE, MCX SPE, zip-tipping, etc.), and precipitation methods. Working knowledge in the area of HPLC and biological mass spectrometry. Experience with more advanced proteomic sample preparation methods (e.g. labeling with TMT reagent, PTM enrichment, etc). Experience in training others in sample preparation methods. Experience in documenting protocols for dissemination to facility users.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $24.04 - $25.97/ hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
