The Principal Photographer, under the direct supervision of an Ophthalmologist, assists in direct and indirect patient care. The Principal Photographer performs a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the operation of specialized equipment to assist in the examination and diagnosis of eye diseases. Principal Photographers may supervise Ophthalmic Photographers.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides assistance in solving photographic problems encountered by other photographers and departmental staff.
  • Imaging requirements include but are not limited to: Digital Fluorescein/ICG Angiography, Color Fundus Photography, Optical Coherence Tomography, Basic/Complex Echography, Retinal Thickness Analysis, Anterior Segment Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy, External and O.R. Photography.
  • Performs diagnostic and documentary ophthalmic photography on infants and children in the operating room and in various clinical settings.
  • Using a portable fundus camera or a slit-lamp camera in an operating room, takes photographs of anesthetized patients with eye diseases.
  • Adapts equipment for specialized instrumentation and for research purposes.
  • Participates in preparation and presentation of specialized materials for conferences and training programs.
  • Develops, conducts, and participates in formal supervisory in-service training programs for departmental personnel.
  • Performs and understands both basic and complex screenings of ultrasound/echography.
  • Obtains certification on requested research studies. Performs imaging review for research cases and uploads to applicable sites as requested by the physician or research parameters.
  • Maintains equipment databases, calibrates machines as needed, and notifies imaging manager of any clinical engineering needs.
  • Instructs lower-level ophthalmic personnel and physician trainees in the performance of relevant imaging modalities.
  • Fulfills requests by Health Information Management/Medical Records for images. Downloads images to appropriate media and coordinates delivery to HIM department.
  • Participates in Ophthalmic Photographers' training, supervision, and discipline.
  • Performs the duties of the lower level of the series when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Two years (24 months) of experience performing basic Ophthalmological imaging services.
  2. One year (12 months) of experience as an Ophthalmic Photographer.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current valid American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
