High school diploma or equivalent, completion of specified training, and 2 years of service at a level of "meets expectations" or higher.

Position Summary

This is responsible police work at the corporal level at the university.

Work involves professional response to the need for enforcing laws and university regulations. Work also involves preventing, investigating, and detecting crimes, and the apprehension of criminals. Work is performed in accordance with department rules and regulations and may be performed in uniform or plain clothes. Employee allocated to this class of work must be assigned to a specialized function which requires knowledge and abilities usually acquired through experience on the force. Guidance and direction are provided to subordinate law enforcement personnel. Work requires dedication to public service often made difficult by emotional or physical stress of events. Work is reviewed through conferences, written reports, inspections, and observation of results obtained.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Considerable knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.

Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest.

Knowledge of university properties, population, and traffic control problems.

Knowledge of first aid principles.

Ability to guide and direct subordinate law enforcement personnel and assist in training programs.

Ability to deal firmly and courteously with subordinates and the public.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and on own initiative, to determine proper course of action to be taken.

Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be established by competent authority.

Skill in furnishing first aid and comfort in case of accidents, illnesses, and death situations.

Duties/Responsibilities

Patrols a designated area of campus in a patrol car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crimes, and to enforce traffic regulations

Takes charge of and guides and directs the work of subordinate law enforcement personnel in various situations until relieved by superior officer

Answers calls and complaints involving fire, traffic or other accidents, robberies, and other misdemeanors and felonies and takes necessary police action.

Investigates crimes against persons and property; interviews victims and witnesses; searches for and evaluates evidence; arrests person or persons suspected of crime.

Prepares various records and reports; testifies in court.
