The Pharmacy Technician III, Lead performs complex pharmaceutical duties and/or are assigned lead roles in Ambulatory Pharmacy Services to manage all functions of the drug distribution process in the pharmacy.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Personnel
  • Supervise Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Externs, and students in the daily functions of pharmacy operation, if delegated by the Associate Director or designee
  • Serve as a liaison for the Discharge Prescription Service (DPS), facilitating communication with a multidisciplinary clinical team comprising of UI Health physicians, clinical pharmacists, medical and pharmacy residents, nurses, hospital discharge planners, social workers, pharmacy technicians, and externs to ensure patients receive timely bedside delivery of their prescription medications upon discharge from the UI Health hospital
  • For SCB Pharmacy, work in conjunction with the Coordinator, Lead Technician, and Purchasing Officer to supervise Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs in the pharmacy operation related to Meds to Beds/Discharge services
  • Coordinate and oversee the completion of daily patient discharges from the UI Health hospital with the pharmacy team
  • Manage daily and monthly data collection to provide departmental statistics and operational performance information for analysis
  • Engage actively in all hospital discharge planning and participate in all discharge initiatives scheduled hospital-wide
  • Promote the Discharge Pharmacy Services program to all staff and patients as appropriate
  • Provide DPS in-services and/or mentoring support to pharmacy technicians, externs, students, and residents as needed
  • Contribute to and support all quality improvement initiatives and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Evaluate the Pharmacy Technician training program and ensure the proper training of all Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs
  • Identify staff development needs for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs and prepare a
    plan to meet those needs, if applicable
  • Assist the Associate Director or designee in performance evaluation feedback for Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs annually, if applicable
  • Provide feedback to the Associate Director or designee to facilitate the continuous evaluation of all processes
  • Exhibit good customer service skills and positive attitude to promote teamwork and to create a good work environment

Operations
  • Determine patient eligibility for the Discharge Prescription Service
  • Check for accurate prescription insurance information or obtain information from patient, family member or other sources
  • Input and update all prescription insurance information into the computer system as required
  • Alert the Medication Assistance Program (MAP) of potential new patient referral for patients without prescription insurance
  • Notify the clinical teams of medication issues (i.e. prior authorization, formulary changes required) in a timely manner to ensure medication coverage at discharge
  • Assist with prescription reimbursement/billing issues of discharge patients
  • Understand the current prescription contracts accepted at UI Health Pharmacies
  • Understand participating pharmacy agreements with third parties
  • Understand reimbursement policies and patterns for pharmacy claims with third parties such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Managed Medicaid
  • Work with third party payers and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to obtain prior authorizations
  • Work with third party insurance carriers, pharmacy and fiscal departments to resolve complex prescriptions situations
  • Dispensing: Coordinate with designated clinical staff for discharge counseling and delivery of prescriptions to the patient's bedside or via the pneumatic tube system
  • Assist pharmacy operations with intake, filling, and dispensing of medications within the pharmacy operations
  • Assess the needs and priorities of various work areas of the pharmacy throughout the day, and assign Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Externs to meet the needs
  • Recognize normal ranges of medication and initiates corrective action as needed
  • Fully participate and support quality improvement initiatives and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements

Communications
  • Attend pharmacy staff meetings to discuss pharmacy operation and Pharmacy Technician issues, and to keep an open communication channel between Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Externs
  • Demonstrate good communication skills with all health care professionals in the clinical setting to assure appropriate patient care
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with patients under stressful situations
  • Demonstrate ability to resolve conflicts appropriately, which may include identifying and involving the appropriate health care professionals to assist the patient most efficiently
  • Demonstrate effective and timely communication skills with the Pharmacists and Assistant Director to fulfill operation needs
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned


Minimum Qualifications Required:

1. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.

2. Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:

A. Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

OR

B. Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

3. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible work experience as a pharmacy technician, which included one (1) year of lead worker duties.
