Senior Metallurgist R&D

Job Description Summary: Provides a diversified range of technical services to our internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals. Responsible for making disposition of referred, non-conforming and off-standard material, including but not limited to RMRs and customer claims. Demonstrates ability to provide training and education to customers. May provide support, leadership, and guidance to peers, customers, and managers in key projects. Applies statistical methods to solve problems and design experiments. Assists in the use of SPC, six-sigma and/or BPI tools to detect project inefficiencies.

Primary Responsibilities for the Senior Metallurgist R&D:

  • Internal expertise related to characterization techniques and tools to facilitate
  • Plays a role in developing new alloys.
  • Scopes out project needs; design experiments using standard experimental design techniques and use advanced techniques for material characterization and data analysis.
  • Performs research hands-on in a laboratory setting.
  • Leads and support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Monitors on-going and future advances in metallurgy.
  • Interacts with customers and internal business units to provide unique material solutions.
  • Supports mill projects related to scale up and production of key alloys.
  • Interacts with national laboratories, universities and industrial consortiums to jointly develop and evaluate new processes and materials.
  • Proactively drives and secures intellectual property.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required for the Senior Metallurgist R&D:

  • Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Science or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience required.

Preferred for the Senior Metallurgist R&D:

  • Specialized knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Specialized knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment.
  • Awareness of newest and latest technologies available.
  • Understanding of the application of statistics, six sigma and BPI practices.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to apply statistical methods in decision making.
  • Ability to apply SPC, six-sigma and BPI tools in projects within functional area.
  • Ability to provide support and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities with minimal assistance.
  • Ability to be a functional individual contributor with minimal supervision. Demonstrates ability to provide training and education to customers.
  • Ability to lead, support and participate on project teams.
  • Ability to provide mentorship to internal resources as requested within functional area.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to deliver results on schedule.
