Job Summary :

A Hand Hygiene Auditor monitors and evaluates healthcare worker hand hygiene practices to ensure compliance with infection prevention standards, collecting data through direct observations, providing feedback to associates for improvement, and uploading hand hygiene audit information to be used for reporting. This part-time position exists to establish a pool of hand hygiene auditors to conduct hand hygiene audits during weekend days and evening shifts only. Hand hygiene audit training will be provided to support the associates' success in this role.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

Observation and Data Collections:

  • Conduct direct observations of hand hygiene practices by staff, patients, and visitors in various clinical settings
  • Observe various healthcare staff and providers , including nurses, therapists, physicians, surgeons, and support personnel
  • Use electronic devices or paper audit sheets to accurately record observations such as the technique used, and compliance rates

Compliance Monitoring

  • Assess hand hygiene compliance at individual, department, unit, and shift levels.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in using soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  • Audit adherence to established guidelines such as those from the CDC, WHO and Leapfrog

Feedback and Education

  • Provide immediate, constructive feedback to healthcare workers on their hand hygiene practices as part of a quality improvement approach

Reporting

  • Document data collected during hand hygiene audits in the required applications to support reporting and further analysis

All other duties as assigned.

Skills and Attributes

  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using an electronic device, a paper audit tool and / or data entry in Excel
  • Observational Skills: Ability to conduct thorough, objective observations to ensure accurate and unbiased data
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to provide constructive feedback and engage with staff in a way that promotes behavior change and improvement
  • Training: Completion of approved auditor training and validation to ensure consistent and current knowledge of audit practices at hire, followed by annual validation

Education and Experience Required

  • Minimal education is high school graduation
  • Clinical background preferred
