Job Summary The Small Business Underwriting Consultant supports profitable growth by shaping underwriting appetite, guidelines, and pricing strategies through cross-functional collaboration. It fosters a disciplined underwriting culture by establishing clear policies, delivering market intelligence, and providing training and expertise. Acts as a subject matter expert in underwriting, providing guidance on complex risks and questions and provides referral support to ensure sound decision making. The position ensures the development of underwriting guidelines that support automated rule creation and maintenance, while also implementing and monitoring performance objectives aligned with strategic goals to support strong underwriting outcomes. Job Responsibilities
- Supports profitable growth by identifying opportunities and obstacles and shaping underwriting appetite, guidelines and pricing strategies through collaboration with Product, Sales, Claims, Legal, Compliance, Risk Control, and others
- Serves as a Small Business underwriting expert, leveraging high level of authority to review and approve underwriting decisions
- Ensures that underwriters decisions are consistent with established authority levels and support sound, and profitable underwriting outcomes
- Fosters a disciplined underwriting culture by establishing clear policies, delivering market intelligence, training and offering subject matter expertise to support effective execution
- Provides clear, actionable underwriting guidelines that enable the development and maintenance of automated underwriting rules
- Ensure pricing strategies reflect both individual risk characteristics and portfolio-level objectives by leveraging data-driven insights and collaborating with actuarial and analytics teams to continuously refine rating models
- Supports strong underwriting outcomes by implementing and monitoring performance objectives that align with strategic goals and accountability
- Supports large account execution by offering risk and market insights and contributes to large loss and large line meetings to extract key learnings and support sound decision-making
- Participates in claims reviews to identify loss drivers and emerging market trends, using these insights to inform and evolve Small Business underwriting appetite and guidelines
- Develops and maintains relationships with Reinsurers and secures reinsurance in facultative markets as needed.
Job Qualifications
- 8+ years of multi-line Commercial Underwriting experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or commensurate work experience.
Location
- Hybrid - defined as working three or more days per week in the office if the employee's residence is within 50 miles of Westfield Center, OH; OR Remote-if the employee resides more than 50 miles from Westfield Center, OH.
