An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of Rail and Transit Engineer based in our Los Angeles office. Reporting to the Rail Lead, you will be involved with the delivery of a range of projects within the Infrastructure Division of Mott MacDonald in California and contribute to a variety of small to large projects in the US.

As a Rail and Transit Engineer, working as an integral part of the infrastructure group, your duties will include but not be limited to:



  • Deliver conceptual engineering and preliminary engineering for Rail & Transit.
  • Coordinate plans for the Client with other agencies and stakeholders.
  • Prepare and update technical reports and specifications.
  • Participate in the preparation of material quantities and cost estimates.
  • Develop operating schematics for train handling procedures within confined terminal facilities.
  • Undertake and advise on operational modelling for Rail and Transit projects.
  • Undertake assistant Project Management duties for Rail and Transit projects.
  • Ability to work as part of a growing team.


The ideal candidate will have experience working within our primary markets along with having the following candidate specifications (preferred candidates will possess the following):



  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or other transportation related field from an accredited University.
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in Rail & Transit.
  • Working towards Professional Engineer (P. E.) designation in California;
  • Good working knowledge of the Class 1 Railroad design standards.
  • Experience in freight rail yard train operation and train handling.
  • Experience in developing layouts for rail facilities to meet the operating requirements.
  • Working knowledge and experience of design and data management software including Civil 3D, Autocad, Word, Excel, VISSIM and Syncro;
  • Experience in working complex modern urban style rapid transit projects in North America.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills in complex and changing environments and
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain good working relationships with clients and project teams.

At Mott MacDonald, we provide a comprehensive benefit package that includes 401k, medical, dental and vision insurance, short-term/long-term disability, paid holidays, PTO, parental leave and company paid life insurance.

The expected salary for this position is $91,000- $112,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
