Position Overview

The Staff Scientist, Product Development Leader is responsible for leading, managing, executing, and completing projects associated with developing new products, or improving existing products. The Staff Scientist, Product Development Leader will hold product development, manufacturing, clinical testing, quality, and regulatory skills to lead multifunctional teams through all phases of product development, from feasibility, development, verification, and validations as well as any post market product development activities. This position provides cross-functional leadership to different technical product development teams as well as other non-product development teams by working to define product development goals and deliverables. This position has a clear understanding of all the skills and tasks associated with successful project execution, which are complex in scope. This position exercises judgment and makes informed decisions using broadly defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action or in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining solutions. This position is responsible for supporting a collaborative environment that promotes positive teamwork where all members are working for the good of Exact Sciences.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Define clear and realistic product development related project goals and deliverables that align with strategic plans.
  • Exercise independent judgment in developing methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining the project deliverables.
  • Provide scientific/technical as well as product development related leadership; influence decisions affecting project planning and experimental design.
  • Provides oversight and management of one or more project teams.
  • Represent R&D in project core team meetings and responsible for apprising senior management regarding R&D projects.
  • Strong teaching/training skills by providing training oversight, guidance, and mentorship related to product development processes.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product Management, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing, Clinical Testing Laboratory, and other teams to play an integral role in supporting new products and improving processes and procedures that drive quality.
  • Analyze and interpret complex and abstract data and results of experiments and recommend alternative experiments to achieve technical project specifications.
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation that summarize experimental results.
  • Organize, present, and convey clear project summaries, reports, and complex problems and information in written and verbal formats at project meetings, across other functions and to senior management teams.
  • Participate in technical decisions, identify problems, perform root cause analysis, investigate alternatives, and recommend possible courses of action.
  • Stay abreast of regulatory, scientific, and technological development in the field as it pertains to research and development of new products, processes, or procedures and contribute to new product initiatives.
  • Ensure teams are properly following all legal, ISO, and QSR documentation requirements.

  • Excellent attention to detail and meticulous record keeping and organizational skills.
  • Utilize excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey important messages and drive focus through a variety of communication methods.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and prioritize initiatives and workload independently and proactively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability and means to travel between Exact Sciences locations.
  • Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Life Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related field; or Master's degree in Life Sciences, Mathematics, or related field and 4 years of experience in lieu of PhD; or Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Mathematics, or related field and 6 years of experience in lieu of PhD.
  • 8+ years of industry or academia experience in biology and/or chemistry.
  • 6+ years of experience in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science, or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Bioinformatics knowledge related to nucleic acid analysis and assay development.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office to including Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of industry or academic research experience in Life Sciences, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in medical device/IVD, biotech, life science or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Deep knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and related sciences.
  • Previous experience as a project lead for a team of scientists.
  • Experience biotech manufacturing environment, preferably in a GMP and/or ISO environment.
  • Previous experience working in a molecular diagnostics/clinical laboratory setting.

Salary Range:

$125,350.00 - $212,750.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis and may differ by hiring location. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
