STS Technical Services is hiring a Tools Design Engineer in Greensboro, North Carolina. This role is responsible for developing and designing production tooling to support aircraft manufacturing in compliance with engineering and manufacturing requirements.
Position Summary
The Tools Design Engineer will coordinate and facilitate tooling design reviews both internally and with external suppliers, ensuring compliance with all engineering standards. This position requires expertise in aircraft tooling, aircraft manufacturing processes, and ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Responsibilities
- Review tooling requests, engineering models, and drawings for development of new tooling designs or modifications
- Develop tooling concepts in support of new engineering development
- Create 3D models and 2D drawings using Catia in alignment with program requirements and the Honda Aircraft Company tooling manual
- Write tooling usage guidelines to ensure functionality and compliance
- Coordinate and facilitate internal and external tooling design reviews with Engineering and Manufacturing teams
- Recommend improvements to tooling design processes, procedures, and philosophies
Qualifications
- Associate degree in a technical field required; Bachelor's degree preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in aircraft tool design (automotive experience also considered)
- Proficient in Catia with at least 10,000 hours of use
- ASME GDTP (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional) certification preferred
- Machining, fabrication, and/or CNC programming experience a plus
Skills and Abilities
- Strong understanding of aircraft manufacturing processes and tooling requirements
- Excellent knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments
- Strong communication and documentation skills
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail
Physical Requirements
- Exposure to equipment operational noise, varying temperatures, dust, and fuel odors
- Ability to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, move, reach, or stretch for extended periods
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 10 lbs. unassisted; up to 25-50 lbs. with company-provided assistance technology
- Must be able to read, hear, speak, and see without restriction as required by job duties
- Ability to work safely and professionally while adhering to FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, state, and federal regulations
