General Notes

Oversees all landscape maintenance operations across the University of Texas at Austin campus, ensuring the grounds are well-maintained, visually appealing, and functionally suited to campus needs.

Purpose

Performs other related duties as assigned, including collaboration with departments within the Campus Operations portfolio. Occasional overtime may be required to support organizational goals and objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates work schedules, staffing, training, field inspections, and task prioritization for landscape maintenance, irrigation, and installation/greenhouse teams. Ensures quality control across all operational areas.
  • Coordinates and establishes maintenance priorities and oversees small-scale projects across the campus.
  • Monitors the UT Works system and manages work orders to ensure tasks are completed, billed appropriately, and properly documented. Verifies that daily labor reports are entered accurately and in full.
  • Develops and delivers performance evaluations and provides staff with support in coaching and corrective actions.
  • Operates campus vehicles and equipment safely, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for each task. Ensures that all Grounds and Landscape department employees comply with UT PPE policies.
  • Oversees the operation and performance of the campus central control irrigation system to ensure efficient and effective water management.
  • Provides input on campus landscape renovation projects, contributing expertise to planning and design discussions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or university.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in landscape maintenance operations, including at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in scheduling, team coordination, and operational oversight.
  • Working knowledge of trade-specific tools and equipment, including central irrigation systems.
  • Familiarity with local plant species and plant health care practices.
  • Experience with work order management systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities.
  • Possess a valid Class C Texas Driver's License and maintain an acceptable driver rating as established in The University of Texas System Policy UTS157.
  • Hold a Non-Commercial Political Pesticide Applicator License with the Texas Department of Agriculture or be able to obtain one within six months of hire.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a landscape-related field such as Horticulture, Natural Sciences, or Landscape Architecture.
  • More than 10 years of experience in landscape maintenance operations, with over 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience working in a university or campus environment.
  • Professional certifications and licenses such as:
  • Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) - PGMS
  • ISA Certified Arborist
  • Licensed Irrigator or Technician
  • Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA)
  • Professional Landscape Architect
  • Non-Commercial Political Pesticide Applicator License
  • Advanced knowledge of:
  • Local plant species and organic landscape practices
  • Soil amendments, fertilizers, and plant health care
  • Greenhouse and nursery operations
  • Proficiency with work order management systems and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across departments.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License and ability to maintain an acceptable driver rating per The University of Texas System Policy UTS157.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$80,000 + depending on qualifications
