Position Highlights

University Facility Services is seeking a dedicated Floor & Carpet Care Worker to join our Custodial Services team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment by providing specialized floor care services across campus. As a key member of the carpet and hard flooring crew, this role focuses on the upkeep of flooring in classrooms, labs, offices, and other university facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates various floor care machines including stripping machine, waxer/buffer, water pick-ups, etc.
  • Sweeps, mops, polishes and strips floors in rooms and halls.
  • Dusts and/or polishes furniture, blinds and equipment.
  • Cleans restrooms and fills dispensers.
  • Vacuums, spot cleans and/or extracts carpets, and furniture using commercial vacuum cleaners and extraction equipment.
  • Reports malfunctions of bathroom fixtures, light fixtures and/or damages to room and hall furnishings to Supervisor.
  • May also replace light bulbs.
  • Initiates work orders for repair/maintenance.
  • Moves furniture, equipment or fixtures as required.
  • Provides quality customer service.
  • Assures all safety precautions are followed in the workplace.
  • Communicates effectively in a professional manner and is a team player.
  • Responds to floods in buildings.
  • Other cleaning duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Cleaning Chemicals and Equipment: Understanding of proper use, dilution, and safety procedures for cleaning agents and floor care equipment (e.g., buffers, extractors, vacuums).
  • Flooring Materials: Knowledge of different types of flooring (e.g., tile, vinyl, carpet, hardwood) and appropriate cleaning methods for each.
  • Safety and Sanitation Standards: Familiarity with OSHA regulations, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and infection control procedures.
  • Maintenance Procedures: Understanding of routine and deep-cleaning schedules, including stripping, waxing, and sealing floors.
  • Operation of Floor Care Equipment: Proficiency in using machines such as auto scrubbers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and complete work efficiently within scheduled time frames.
  • Attention to Detail: Skill in identifying areas needing extra attention and ensuring high standards of cleanliness.
  • Follow Instructions: Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions, including safety protocols.
  • Work Independently and in Teams: Flexibility to work alone or collaboratively with others.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to adjust to changing schedules, tasks, or cleaning priorities.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting/moving up to 30 pounds often.
  • Lifting/moving up to 50 pounds rarely.
  • Capability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods and handle physically demanding tasks.

Work Environment:

  • Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for more than an hour.
  • Noise: There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
  • Vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
  • Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals in a work setting.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience in a college/university setting.
  • Two years or more of institutional custodial experience.
  • Experience operating carpet cleaning and floor finishing machines. For example: buffers, extractors, auto scrubbers, and propane burnishers.
