Position title: Assistant Professor Salary range:
The current salary range for this position is $80,800 - $128,700 (9-month academic year salary); however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions. Anticipated start:
7/1/2026 Application Window Open date: August 30, 2025 Next review date: Saturday, Oct 25, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Final date: Saturday, Oct 25, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Position description The University of California at Berkeley is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Modern Southeast Asian Humanities in the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies with an expected start date of July 1, 2026. Southeast Asian humanities is a broad field of study, and may include studies of different countries and cultures in the region. Potential foci include but are not limited to humanistic approaches to archival research, digital humanities, narrative traditions. Tenure-track Assistant Professors at Berkeley are expected to excel in research, teaching and service. Duties will include developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in Southeast Asian studies, with a special focus on the humanities, supervising and mentoring graduate students, and contributing to the Departmental and university mission through service. Ph.D. or equivalent international degree or enrolled in Ph.D or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application. Preferred qualifications
Evidence of proposed or prior academic, professional and/or public service, including activities that would remove barriers and increase participation of academics in Southeast Asian studies. The department is particularly interested in-but will not limit itself to-research on Indonesia, the Malay World and/or Islam in Southeast Asia.
