The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs, and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at
ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services, residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and career services. |
Description of Work |
This position is a temporary position.
The Director of Student Life and Engagement is responsible for fostering a vibrant and inclusive student experience through the development and execution of co-curricular programs and campus-wide initiatives that support student engagement, leadership, and retention. This role plays a vital part in advancing the mission of Elizabeth City State University by enhancing student life, promoting Viking Pride, and supporting student success.
The Director provides leadership and coordination for major university traditions, including Viking Showcase (Fall, Winter, Spring), Homecoming, Winter Homecoming, Viking Fest, and Founders Day Convocation and Weekend. In collaboration with the Director of Alumni Relations and Engagement, the Director ensures that new and transfer students are introduced to and remain engaged in the Pre-Alumni Association, with a particular focus on philanthropic education and long-term alumni engagement.
The Director works in close coordination with the Director for Leadership Development to plan and implement civic engagement initiatives and student leadership training programs that support students' personal and professional growth. All programs and initiatives must be developed in consultation with the Executive Director of Student Engagement and Leadership, who has the lead decision-making role to initiate or adjust programming as needed to ensure alignment with departmental and divisional priorities.
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Deputy Student Affairs Officer maintains overarching oversight and holds final decision-making authority for all operations within the Division of Student Affairs. This structure ensures that all programs are strategically aligned with the university's mission and institutional goals, while supporting effective and student-centered outcomes.
Key responsibilities of the Director include:
- Advising the Freshmen Class and leading class-specific programming designed to enhance first-year student engagement, including Freshmen Student Elections and Freshmen Showcase.
- Developing and maintaining a comprehensive, annual calendar of events, workshops, and initiatives tailored to new and transfer students, ensuring alignment with broader departmental and university goals.
- Managing assigned budgets responsibly to ensure effective use of resources in support of student development.
- Coordinating assessment strategies and data collection to evaluate program effectiveness and inform continuous improvement.
- Establishing, updating, and enforcing operational policies and procedures to enhance program delivery and ensure compliance with institutional standards.
- Providing administrative and programmatic support to other Student Affairs areas as needed.
- Representing the Division of Student Affairs in university-wide committees, events, and external engagements as designated.

Leadership Approach:
The Director is expected to function with a high level of professionalism, initiative, and collaboration. While the role involves independent planning and leadership, the
Executive Director provides final approval on key decisions to ensure consistency, strategic alignment, and operational cohesion within the department.
Minimum training requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's in Student Affairs/Higher Education preferred) with at least two years of experience in positions of which responsibilities include student activities or other Student Affairs-higher education-oriented areas; or a combination of education and experience in Higher Education.
