HJF is seeking an Audiology Engineer who assists in the development, execution, analysis, and documentation of auditory and vestibular studies focused on the evaluation and development of improved hearing protection systems, the establishment of improved metrics and standards for evaluating the minimum hearing standards for fitness-for-duty; and the development of improved clinical strategies for mitigating the effects of noise and blast related hearing injury.

This position will be in support of the Audiology and Speech Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The goal of the study is to validate injury risk models in environments to include firing ranges and airfields by FY21. This study will evaluate systems that are capable of being worn in the ear in lieu of hearing protector during the noise exposure, and obtaining objective hearing data from behavior auditory tests and/or otoacoustic emissions pre-and post-exposure.

  • Assists in the development, integration, and installation of custom and modified COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) hardware, software, and related equipment as required for the implementation of clinical and field studies related to hearing research.
  • Assists in the development of the research protocol as the subject matter expert. Reviews research documentation and provide detailed technical written notes.
  • Directs and performs recurring analyses on research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progress
  • Manages and organizes data and assures that necessary archival procedures have been conducted.
  • Interacts with other services and government agencies, organizes and hosts research planning and coordination meetings, and informs the Principal Investigator of developments.
  • Maintains open communication with the Principal Investigator, advises of processes, reports progress and serves as a point of contact, as applicable.
  • Performs scientific reviews on research proposals submitted for consideration.
  • Provides guidance to scientists preparing research proposals, to include guidance on research protocol development, as needed.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Master's degree required, Doctoral degree preferred within Audiology, Engineering, Biology, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Linguistics, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of research data collection and records maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the ability to manage Protected Health Information (PHI) required.
  • Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication.
  • Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to be flexible with changing priorities and available to interact with employees, clients and sponsors of all levels.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment; Computer skills, including advanced experience in using MATLAB to interface with audio and visual equipment.
  • US citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $73,800-$125,600. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
