Job Summary

The University of California Veterinary Medical Center of San Diego (UCVMC-SD) is a clinical, teaching and research satellite of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. As the Pharmacist on duty, provide direct dispensation of pharmaceuticals based on inpatient and outpatient prescriptions for the canine and feline patients through the clinic dispensary. During the shift, provide direct oversight to all activities as the related to the practice of pharmacy in compliance with applicable State and Federal regulation. Perform basic prescription compounding, inclusive of drug calculations, dosage form preparation, record keeping, and compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulation. Also guide the clinical staff on efficient drug procurement and distribution practices to optimize patient care. Access and distribute controlled substances in compliance with all applicable regulation. Assist in maintaining the clinic inventory of pharmaceuticals. Duties will include providing customer service and pet owner counseling. In addition, provide ad hoc teaching and supervision to technician assistants, registered veterinary technicians, veterinary and pharmacy students; and clinical consultation to veterinarians and veterinary specialists.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
  • Current California licensed Pharmacist in good standing.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy.
  • A minimum of two years' experience working within a veterinary pharmacy setting.
  • Proficient typing skills, and skills to multi-task.Skills to work independently without technical assistance.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral communication and problem solving skills in a fast-paced, veterinary specialty environment.
  • Skill to interact with clients, students, trainees, other pharmacist, and veterinarians.
  • Understanding of drug usage and skills to calculate and verify drug dosages for canine and feline patients.
  • Skills to provide excellent customer service both on the phone and in-person.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diplomate in the International College of Pharmacy and/or current membership in the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists.
  • Previous work experience in veterinary pharmacy, inclusive of residency training or continued professional education in veterinary pharmacy.
  • Previous work experience in a veterinary pharmacy, hospital pharmacy or compounding pharmacy.
  • Familiarity with the VMACS electronic medical record system.

The UC Veterinary Medical Center, San Diego's mission is to discover, apply, and disseminate new knowledge to promote animal health and welfare, and to advance the diagnosis, treatment, control and prevention of animal diseases. The UCVMC-SD is a regional clinic affiliated with the world-renowned University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The UCVMC-SD currently brings specialized services in the areas of Hemodialysis/Nephrology/Urology, Cardiology and Clinical Pharmacy with near-term planned growth in the areas of Cardiology, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Surgery (among others to be defined) as we move to a newly purchased building three times larger than our current location.
