Position Summary:
Reporting to the Department Chair, the Programs Director serves as the department manager of academic programs and initiatives. The position involves student success planning and initiatives, university and department initiatives, management of academic administrative functions, and teaching classes. This position leads the department ABET assessment, continuous improvement and accreditation processes. The Director collects input for constituencies, and prepares and presents program information and strategic initiatives to the Advisory Board. Being the central academic director to the department, the specifics of the Program Director's job will vary, depending on the needs at the time, academic initiatives, and the growth of department. Essential Functions:
- Oversees the performance of academic programs in terms of student success and department goals and initiatives. Meets regularly with the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies (ADUS) and keeps informed of the undergraduate program issues. Meets regularly with the Director of MS programs (DMSP) and keeps informed of MS program issues. Identifies unmet teaching and student advising needs, formulates solutions and reports to the Department Chair. Serves as a back up to the all BME academic program operation.
- Coordinates the curriculums, student enrollment between the undergraduate and graduate programs. Handles academic issues that need to be addressed by the Department Chair and faculty committees. Gathers relevant information, prepares data, trends analysis, and review presentations for faculty committees and the Department Chair.
- Acts as the academic administrator for the joint BME PhD program, addressing admissions, program administration, coordination between Rutgers NJMS and NJIT BME, and recruitment.
- Assist the Department Chair and the Assistant to the Chair in coordinating adjunct faculty instruction by communicating about course schedules and initiating contracts. Provide assistance to adjunct faculty members with instructional needs and questions. Help with identifying and recruiting new adjunct faculty members for instructional needs.
- Works with department faculty members to provide the information needed for assessment of teaching effectiveness.
- Manages the department accreditation and assessment processes. Coordinates the collection of assessment data, analysis of data and preparation of assessment and accreditation documents. Co-Chairs the ABET committee with the faculty ABET coordinator.
- Assists the Department Chair with collecting, organizing and presenting academic program data for university requests, program initiatives, and external communications.
- Provides instruction of BME courses as assigned by the Department Chair. Instructional duties will be within the maximum allowable contact hours for this position.
- Leads all academic initiatives and projects for the department as assigned by the Department Chair. Additional Functions:
- Co-Chairs the BME graduate curriculum committee with the DMSP.
- Works with the Office of Graduate Studies and Office of International Students as necessary on department level requests and issues.
- Attends university undergraduate and graduate curriculum committees.
- Leads departmental efforts in cooperative education assignments and internships for students, including developing opportunities, managing students on co-op assignments and maintaining employer relations.
- Chairs the departmental Awards Committee
- Prepare presentations and attend Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) meetings and activities. Serves as the department's liaison on IAB sub committees.
- Serves on the BME Undergraduate Curriculum Committee. Proposes changes in the curriculum, degree requirements, and related matters, and communicates them to the Chair.
- Participate in recruitment events (e.g., experience days, open houses, NJMS interviews, new student orientations, transfer events)
- Manages TA assignments with instructors, collects reviews from instructors and communicates to the Department Chair.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
- MS degree in biomedical engineering or related field; or equivalent.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong judgment and decision-making capability.
- 3 yrs previous experience working in an academic environment.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD degree in biomedical engineering or related field; or equivalent. Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the negotiated annual salary range for this position is $73,502.29-$137,773.44 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
