Your Role
As a Composite Mechanic, you'll play an essential part in maintaining and repairing diesel-powered rail equipment. From conducting engine overhauls to retrofitting emission control systems-and even troubleshooting electrical and braking systems-you will ensure smooth, safe operations across our fleet. Key Responsibilities
Uphold all railroad and FRA safety and operational standards.
Diagnose, maintain, and fix engine malfunctions, air brakes, running gear, and locomotive components.
Manage and update work orders in our asset management system.
Collaborate in operating rail equipment-locomotives, passenger coaches, prime movers-for safe and efficient transport.
Perform other tasks as specified under union guidelines and incidental work rules.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED.
Valid Driver's License.
Minimum 2 years of combined mechanical/electrical experience-or equivalent formal training.
Proficient in reading blueprints and circuit schematics.
Preferred Skills & Competencies
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving orientation.
Ability to interpret safety manuals, procedures, and technical directives.
Excellent communication for seamless teamwork and adherence to instructions.
Foundational mechanical and electrical aptitude.
Must be eligible for Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) certification.
A clean driving record, specifically no moving violations related to alcohol or substance abuse in the past 36 months.
Basic proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office tools like Outlook.
Physical Requirements
Capable of heavy manual lifting (up to 70 lbs routinely; up to 100 lbs occasionally).
Regular activities include stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and walking across uneven surfaces.
Must maintain strong auditory and visual awareness.
Occasional exposure to elevated temperatures.
Working Conditions
Follow all safety protocols and wear required protective gear (hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, glasses).
Flexible scheduling may include overtime and shift variations.
Pass annual safety training and exams.
Comply with random drug and alcohol testing and assessments; successful post-offer medical and substance screening is required.
Governed by a collective bargaining agreement; union membership required.
Internal applicants must complete one year in their current role before applying.
