Tufting Mechanic

1. Purpose

The purpose of the Phenix Flooring LLC procedure for Tufting Mechanic is to ensure that all employees performing this job understand the responsibilities and requirements of the position. This job description encompasses various mechanic positions within Phenix Flooring.

1. Scope

This policy will ensure that all employees and shifts are consistent when implementing this procedure.

1. Duties

Safety:

Perform all job duties in a safe manner

• 
  
  
  
  • Follow all safety rules/procedures, including but not limited to: Lock-out/tag-out, safety glasses/goggles, stop signs and walk ways, lift truck safety procedures, etc.
  • Wear PPE as required
  • Report all safety issues to a Supervisor immediately
  
  
  
  
• Style Changes (Fixer, Lead Mechanic, Mechanic)
  
  
  
  • Start style changes as directed by shift Supervisor
  • Follow the "Tufting Spec Sheet" for set-up requirements
    
    
    
    • Pile Height
    • Stitches
    • Sewing Width
    • Step
    • Pens
    • Machine set-up specifications:
      
      
      
      • Pulley sizes/settings
      • Belt alignment
      • Shifter cam #
      • Sprocket size
      • Stroke cam size
      • Bed setting
      • Jerker bar setting
      
      
      
      
    
    
    
    
  • Run out a weight check and take it to the Quality Area
  • Make any adjustments needed. (The QC Tech or Supervisor will tell you what is needed)
  • Run another weight check if needed until the set-up is correct
  • Return to the machine and run the carpet up to the mending frame
  • Check the carpet for quality issues; comb for loops, watch for shift marks, etc.
  • Sign-off on the "Tufting Spec Sheet"
    
    
    
    • NOTE*Once you sign-off on the spec sheet, you are indicating that you have set this machine up to the exact machine set-up specifications listed. All employees who sign-off on spec sheets will be held accountable if machines setting differ from the spec sheet
    • If something is different, you must mark it out and write the correct information on it.
    • If any changes have been made to the spec sheet, make a copy and place it in the Manager's mailbox.
    • If changes are made to the spec sheet, it will be reviewed by management and changed in the system after validation

  • Make any adjustments as instructed by the Supervisor for weight, set-up, or quality issues
  
  
  
  
• Preventive Maintenance Checks (Tufting Mechanic)
  
  
  
  • Complete any PM checks as instructed by Maintenance Supervisor
  
  
  
  
• Troubleshooting
• Quality Checks
  
  
  
  • If no style changes are needed and no other instructions have been given, walk each tufting machine and look at the carpet for quality issues
  • Check Operator machine reports for quality issues
  • If any issues are found, fix the problem immediately
  
  
  
  
• Other
  
  
  
  • In between normal duties of style changes, quality issues, and troubleshooting, other assignments will be listed in the maintenance shop or give verbally. This may include loading or unloading blade blocks, gathering dull blades from machines, cleaning, etc.
  • Assist new Operators or Relief Operators as needed or instructed by the Supervisor
  • Conduct major projects as required (Mechanic)
  • Conduct Rebuilds as required (Mechanic)
  • Conduct projects requiring welding and fabricating as required. Ensure all hot work permits are in order. (Welder/Fabricator)
  • Conduct maintenance and PM's on Lift Trucks as required (Lift Truck Mechanic)
  • Perform any building/facility maintenance as required (All)
  • Conduct minor electrical work as required (All)
  • Keep housekeeping in order
