About the Job

Responsibilities

Network Design, Implementation, and Maintenance (50%)
- Design, implement, and maintain moderately complex network systems that extend beyond centrally provided institutional services.
- Reconfigure and optimize existing network infrastructure to enhance performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Assist in the planning and execution of network upgrades, expansions, and lifecycle replacements.
- Monitor and maintain the health of all supported network systems using standard monitoring tools and practices.
- Apply best practices for high availability, load balancing, and system redundancy.

Network Services and Core Protocols (20%)
- Administer essential network services such as DNS, DHCP, routing policies, and VLAN configurations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network-related issues.
- Manage subnet allocation and maintain accurate IP address management documentation.
- Implement logical segmentation using VLANs and other techniques to support departmental and security needs.

Collaboration and Client Support (15%)
- Act as a point of contact for network-related requests and troubleshoot issues submitted by users or departments.
- Coordinate project-specific network configurations with faculty or IT colleagues.
- Provide timely response and resolution of service tickets related to networking infrastructure.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams regarding networking capacities, concerns, or limitations.
- Delegating and assigning work to CSE-IT Network Student Workers as needed.

Documentation and Asset Management (10%)
- Maintain detailed and accurate network diagrams, configuration records, and procedural documentation.
- Track and manage networking hardware and licensing using asset management tools.
- Document all supported network environments, including departmental or lab-specific configurations.

Collaboration & Professional Development (5%)
- Participate in related CSE and University professional groups and/or Communities of Practice to ensure the needs and interests of the College are represented.
- Contribute to, understand, and carry out the IT@UMN vision and strategy.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience, or master's degree.
- Two years of experience working in network administration.
- Familiarity with configuration tools and methodologies for industry standard networking equipment
- Familiarity with network protocols across the OSI 7-layer model
- Ability to collaborate and maintain respectful relationships with faculty, staff, and students from a diverse range of backgrounds
- Ability to balance a workload consisting of proactive, project-focused work and incoming requests from clients in an effective manner
- Able to lift 40lbs
- Able for work in cramped, cold, and/or dusty environments

Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with IPv6, including migration from IPv4
- Experience with Linux and other desktop operating systems
- Experience with scripting and automation as it applies to network administration
- Experience with version control software such as git/Github, Subversion, or Mercurial
- Knowledge of virtualisation systems such as vSphere and Proxmox
- Knowledge of provisioning systems such as Puppet or Ansible

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $75,000-82,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
