Position Highlights

The Arizona Geological Survey is a nonacademic research department in the University of Arizona tasked with furthering our understanding of the geology, mineral resources, and natural hazards of Arizona. We invite applications for a Research Scientist with expertise in economic geology to join our team.

The Research Scientist/Economic Geologist will be responsible for contributing to scientific projects related to mineral resources and bedrock geology. The individual will conduct fieldwork, analytical work, compile spatial data, contribute to report writing, and develop proposals relevant to Arizona's mineral resources. This individual will provide technical expertise to other researchers, public and private stakeholders, and members of the public to further our understanding of Arizona's natural resources.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and/or lead scientific project relating to mineral resources and bedrock geology that complement AZGS's mission.
  • Utilize expertise to conduct fieldwork, collect samples, and other scientific tasks in support of project.
  • Will co-author peer-reviewed scientific papers and technical reports.
  • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with AZGS scientists, UA researchers, private-sector industries, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, AZ tribes, and other academic institutions.
  • Participates in writing proposals for external funding with internal and external partners.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all groups/individuals.
  • Ability to manage scientific samples and data.
  • Knowledge of mineral resources geology.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or related field AND minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license upon hire and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Geology or a related field with three (3) or more years of relevant work experience.
