THE ROLE

The position of Corporate Controller is responsible for directing the financial accounting and reporting, corporate financial planning, financial systems, and internal control activities of MFS. The position directly manages Sr. Directors of Corporate Finance and their teams as they meet all corporate accounting and reporting requirements, complete financial and regulatory reporting for MFS subsidiaries, compile financial analytics to support business units and strategic initiatives, provide investor relationship information to Sun Life, provide appropriate presentations to Boards (MFS, Funds, Sun Life) and establish all accounting policies. Presents key financial analytics to Enterprise Leadership Team to support all business decisions. Directs and coordinates activities with the Company's parent, independent auditor, regulatory agencies, and other external constituencies concerned with the organization's financial position and financial disclosures. Represents the firm's financial interests with industry, governmental, and regulatory organizations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Responsible for MFS financial activities including accounting, financial planning and budgeting, financial analysis and reporting, financial systems; and financial regulatory compliance. The principal responsibilities of this position are as follows:

  • Through a team of financial managers and controllers, oversees the hiring, training, establishment of performance standards and monitoring of performance of financial staff. Ensures the professional development of staff, including establishing goals and objectives and communicating regularly on performance status and development. Fosters a culture that is consistent with MFS' core values.

  • Provides input to and communicates the needs and challenges of MFS' business strategy and key initiatives.Provides financial analysis of key business initiatives to help prioritize and gain support, understanding and commitment.Develops and communicates recommendations and alternatives for the principal financial strategies of MFS to the CFO and Enterprise Leadership Team (including capital planning, cost management objectives, the framework for cost/benefit and/or payback analyses etc.). Frequently presents periodic financial results to MFS senior management and Board of Directors (including Corporate and Fund Audit Committees, as appropriate), as well as other internal and external constituencies. Interacts frequently with the members of MFS' Management Committee as well as with senior managers across the MFS organization. Participates in the analysis of acquisitions/divestitures, joint ventures, strategic alliances and other domestic and global partnerships.

  • Oversees all aspects of financial and reporting to Sun Life's finance organization, including earnings forecasts and monthly close data. Coordinates the Company's quarterly business review process with MFS and Sun Life executive management, including setting agendas and providing key materials.Manages the preparation of consolidated current year and long-range forecasts.

  • Directs the appropriate allocation of costs across MFS' products and business lines to ensure the meaningful reporting and communication of financial results to enable MFS management to make well informed business decisions. Oversees the product profitability process - including the annual 15c process with the Funds' Board.Participates in deliberations with the Fund Board trustees regarding service fees and contract renewals.

  • Oversees the consolidated annual and interim financial close and reporting process and actively pursues and supports initiatives to maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of the Company's financial reporting.

  • Manages the Company's annual financial planning and budget process. Challenges business leaders on strategic priorities and budget assumptions to ensure that projections are realistic.

  • Ensures that sound internal control processes are in place and that financial compliance and regulatory requirements are being met. Anticipates the impact of proposed regulatory changes, as applicable. Responsible for establishing accounting practices, policies, and procedures for MFS and its subsidiaries.

  • Manages and oversees MFS' corporate relationships with the Company's independent auditors and other external accounting firms.

  • Leads and/or participates in special projects, as requested.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's degree minimum, preferably with a concentration in accounting, although consideration will be given to other finance-related concentrations. MBA and/or CPA preferred. The equivalent combination of education and experience in the investment management industry.

  • 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in managing a financial and administrative organization.

  • Must have solid management skills, including the ability to motivate staff, provide meaningful and regular performance feedback, identify career pathing opportunities, etc.

  • Must have excellent project management and coordination skills and the ability to lead and implement new processes and/or initiatives across an organization.

  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communications skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with a Financial Services organization.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • CPA or MBA preferred.
