Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Services, a unit of the Department of Pharmacy Practice in the UIC College of Pharmacy is seeking a full time Pharmacy Technician III, Oncology Lead for our Oncology Clinic Pharmacy located in the UI Health Outpatient Care Center. The Oncology Pharmacy team requires a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified pharmacy technician who has at least 3 years of experience in preparing, compounding, and labeling sterile preparations, including hazardous chemotherapeutic agents. Demonstrated experience with IV admixture, USP 797/800 in a hospital or outpatient setting is required. This position is primarily a day shift position Monday - Friday with a range of hours between 7:30am and 5:30pm.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing, compounding and labeling sterile preparations, including hazardous chemotherapeutic agents and IV admixture under direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist
  • Provide pharmaceutical care to several clinics including the oncology clinic and infusion, nutrition and wellness clinic, arthritis and kidney clinic, and pediatric clinic
  • Monitoring and maintaining staff/pharmacy USP 797/800 compliance as required by the Joint Commission and State Board of Pharmacy
  • Work as a reliable team player who communicates well, can quickly learn and adapt to change, be a proactive problem solver, prioritizes details and safety protocols, and maintains an efficient workflow.
  • Purchasing and maintaining inventory
  • Multi-tasking in a fast-paced setting while paying attention to detail
  • Managing the payroll process for pharmacy technicians
  • Understanding and acting in accordance with the laws pertaining to confidentiality
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.

    2. Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:

    A) Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

    OR

    B) Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.

    3. Three (3) years (36 months) of progressively more responsible work experience as a pharmacy technician, which included one (1) year of lead worker duties.

    4. Must be a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)-certified Pharmacy Technician.

    5. Minimum of 3 years of experience in sterile compounding required. This time is concurrent with the three-year experience listed in the MAQs.

    6. Demonstrated ability to apply U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Chapters 797 and 800 standards in practice within a hospital or outpatient setting.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Three to five years of experience in purchasing, preparing, compounding, and labeling sterile preparations, including hazardous chemotherapeutic agents.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmaceutical classification of drugs and dosage range.
    • Thorough knowledge of procedures necessary for ordering drugs, storing drugs and rotating stock and medication recalls.
    • Knowledge of University Policies and Procedures.
    • Knowledge of medication supply sources and inventory maintenance/control.
    • Skill in the calculation of advanced pharmaceutical problems.
    • Skill in preparation of daily work reports.
    • Skill in patient record keeping and reports.
    • Supervisory skills, including scheduling, hiring, firing, training, and performance evaluations.
    • Ability to accurately interpret data, determine validity of results, and initiate corrective action immediately.
    • Ability to conduct quality assurance audits.
