Job Overview

The Buyer is a trusted, collaborative, results-driven leader and business partner, known for leading through influence with professional maturity and industry credibility. This individual is a skilled merchant with a passion for trends and excels in managing complexity and rapid growth. The Buyer combines a strategic vision for assortment to drive sales with a strong focus on speed and execution.

What You Will Do



  • Set and execute a strategic assortment vision that aligns with Macy's Backstage initiatives and meets financial targets.
  • Create compelling assortments that reflect fashion trends and offer significant value.
  • Build and maintain vendor partnerships, negotiating the best assortments for timely delivery and optimal value.
  • Identify and pursue growth opportunities to drive sales and delight customers.
  • Simplify processes, make decisive actions, and demonstrate agility in leadership.
  • Lead and collaborate effectively, embracing change and fostering a culture of continuous improvement through open feedback.
  • Bring enthusiasm, passion, and a desire to develop product expertise.
  • Communicate openly and encourage debate to ensure the best ideas come forward.
  • Evaluate assortments with the customer in mind, ensuring a balance of customer value and trend relevance in decisions.
  • Identify and act on white space opportunities in the off-price market with a focus on speed and value.
  • Approach the business with an entrepreneurial mindset, constantly seeking new opportunities to introduce to the market quickly.
  • Build trusting relationships with vendors, negotiating win-win solutions, and adapting creatively to different negotiation scenarios.
  • Target key brands for sales growth and effectively pitch Macy's Off Price to onboard new vendors.
  • Maintain a reputation for credibility, integrity, and responsiveness with internal and external partners.
  • Lead the development of pre-season financial plans at department, vendor, and class levels, while managing liquidity in-season to capitalize on opportunistic purchases and adjust sales plans as needed.
  • Present brand or classification strategies to the DMM.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies that align with customer profiles.
  • Travel as needed for competitive shopping, market visits, store assessments, and warehouse evaluations.
  • Focus on building and developing talent within the team.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training.


Skills You Will Need

Strategic Vision: Ability to set and execute a strategic assortment vision that aligns with business initiatives and drives financial targets.

Trend Expertise: Strong passion for fashion trends, with the ability to curate compelling assortments that offer value to customers.

Vendor Management: Skilled in building and sustaining vendor partnerships, including effective negotiation for optimal value and timely delivery.

Leadership & Collaboration: Proven leadership and team collaboration skills, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and openness to feedback.

Customer-Centric Approach: Strong focus on customer value, ensuring assortments meet both customer needs and trend relevance.

Negotiation & Relationship Building: Expertise in vendor negotiations, seeking win-win solutions, and adapting to varying negotiation scenarios.

Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of financial planning, managing liquidity, and adjusting in-season strategies to capitalize on opportunities.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and concisely.

Creative Problem Solving: Ability to think both creatively and strategically to overcome challenges.

Technical Proficiency: Proficient in MS Office programs, with strong technical skills to mnage data and processes effectively.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 5+ years of experience.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
