The University of Illinois Chicago, Ambulatory Pharmacy Services is seeking a full time, motivated pharmacy technician II. This position is for the Patient Access Center (PAC) of Specialty Pharmacy Services. This position requires a reliable team player who excels in providing great customer care to a culturally diverse patient population. Ideal candidates are those that can quickly adapt to change, solve complex pharmacy problems, be proactive, have experience with navigating through pharmacy insurance, ability to navigate the electronic medical record (EMR), and maintain an efficient workflow. The hours are Monday through Friday with the range of work hours being (7:00am - 5:00pm) based upon operational need. This is a hybrid onsite/remote position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities (under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist):
In addition to performing all functions of a Pharmacy Technician I, the Pharmacy Technician II, Patient Access Center, will:

  • Manage and prioritize requests for benefits investigations, prior authorizations, and appeals.
  • Ensure accuracy of filling out and completing prior authorization information.
  • Submit and follow up on prior authorization requests in a timely manner.
  • Maintain detailed documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Manage, prioritize, and respond to faxes and messages from insurance companies, clinic staff, and pharmacy staff.
  • Communicate effectively with patients about prior authorization process or obtaining updated pharmacy benefit insurance information.
  • Communicate prior authorization outcome to providers, clinic staff, internal UI Health pharmacies, and patients.
  • Promote high-quality patient care and customer service.
  • Assist with training new staff, students, and externs as well as provide feedback for performance evaluations of technicians, students, and externs as directed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications:

    1. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.
    2. Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:
      1. Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.
      2. OR
      3. Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.
    3. One (1) year (12 months) of work experience as a pharmacy technician.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Certified Pharmacy Technician
    • Experience with third party resolution (TPR) with pharmacy insurance
    • Prior experience completing prior authorizations
    • Bilingual English/Spanish
