BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT PAINTER Department of Aviation Bureau of Skilled Trade Section Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $54.30/HR This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF PAINTERS ALLIED TRADE COUNCIL, LOCAL 14 (BARGAINING UNIT #39). Select your correct bargaining unit FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS WILL RESULT IN A REJECTED BID APPLICATION Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 8/19/2025 Under general supervision, performs journey level work in the preparation and painting of interior and exterior walls, floors, ceilings, structures and surfaces of municipal facilities; and performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Reads blueprints, specifications and work orders to assess work required and to determine most appropriate preparation and application methods to use * Applies primer, paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to multi-surfaces such as, concrete, metal, glass, wood, vinyl, sheetrock and plaster with sprayers, rollers and brushes * Cleans and prepares surfaces to ensure paint and other finishes will adhere properly * Fills and smooth's holes, cracks, and joints with spackle, caulk and compounds * Removes old paint from wood, brick, metal and other surfaces by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, air blasting and power washing * Erects scaffolding and ladders to perform painting work above ground level * Works on aerial lifts to clean, prime and paint high surfaces * Mixes latex and oil-based paints, tints primers and paints, and prepares epoxies * Paints viaducts, crosswalks, stripes parking lots and applies street pavement markings such as, stop bars, skip dashes, bike lanes and symbols, curbs, and other markings * Loads and unloads equipment and supplies * Spreads drop clothes and plastic sheeting to protect equipment and surrounding areas * Cleans paint applicators, equipment and work sites after paint jobs are completed * Prepares daily work activity reports * Moves furnishings, equipment and other obstacles to complete paint jobs, as needed Additional duties may be required for this position Location: 11601 W. Touhy Hour/Days: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM; Monday - Friday Hour/Nights: 11:00 PM - 6:30 AM; Sunday - Thursday THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor registered painting apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of training and experience * Require a valid State of Illinois driver's license Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications * Some positions may require the permanent use of an automobile that is properly insured, including a clause specifically insuring the City of Chicago from accident liability * Some positions may require completion of a U.S. Department of Labor Outreach Training Program (OSHA card) * May require an EPA Lead Abatement Certification * May require previous work experience painting concrete viaducts and using paint to create pavement markings including curbs, gutters, stop bars, crosswalks, skip dashes, bike lanes and symbols WORKING CONDITIONS * Exposure to outdoor weather conditions * Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust * Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites) * May perform in cramped or confined locations * Work performed above or below ground level * Work performed using scaffolds and ladders, and aerial lifts. EQUIPMENT * Standard tools and equipment of the painting trade (e.g., painters grip, taping knives, brushes, rollers, roller handles, extension poles) * Ladders, scaffolding and aerial lifts. * Standard power and hand tools and equipment of the painting trade (e.g., pressure washer, spray pump, air compressor, gravity-fed paint machine, gas powered paint sprayer, boom, scissor lift) * Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves) * Safety devices or equipment (e.g., cones, barricades, rigging, scaffolding, ropes) * Measuring tools (e.g., tape measure, ruler, calipers, measuring wheel) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS * Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required (e.g., stackable scaffolding) * Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time * Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs * Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools * Ability to work above ground on staging equipment for extended periods of time * Ability to access difficult to enter spaces (e.g., basements, cramped quarters) * Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment NOTE: APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM CERTIFICATE(S), JOURNEYMAN CARD. RESUME AND VALID STATE OF ILLINOIS DRIVER'S LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED AT THE TIME OF PROCESSING. Selected candidates may be required to obtain Basic Airfield Driving endorsement (Yellow Stripe Certification) within 90 days of hire. SELECTION REQUIREMENTS This is a Non-Interview title and does not require a test. Bidders who APPLY CORRECTLY will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement. Non-Bidders who APPLY CORRECTLY will be hired in lottery/random order. The candidate selected for hire must pass an airport background check and a Security Threat Assessment (STA) APPLICATION EVALUATION: Initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application and the documents submitted.
