Performs a broad range of activities to support the overall Y-12 APMO Operations and Security oversight efforts within the specialized areas of fire protection, construction, testing and commissioning of nuclear facilities. The functions and expertise provided by the Fire Protection Engineer ensures APMO's ability to understand and monitor the implementation of the M&O Contractor's fire protection program. This understanding allows for compliance-based and performance-based perspectives in determining the adequacy of the Contractor's fire protection program requirements and the effectiveness of implementation in these areas.

Job Description

Working under limited management direction, the Senior Fire Protection Engineer:



  • Serves as Y-12 APMO's subject matter expert on fire protection.


  • Reviews and evaluates the contractor's implementation of the fire protection program (to include field activities/walkdowns), technical products, and records to ensure they contain and conform to appropriate quality requirements and are technically accurate and complete for their intended purposes.
  • Provides technical guidance, responses, and support to Y-12 APMO management and internal staff.
  • Plans and performs assessments as directed by management.
  • Reviews progress, evaluates results, and recommends changes to processes and procedures.
  • Determines and pursues courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. These assignments may include frequent interface with the M&O Contractors and oversight activities during normal and outside of normal working hours.
  • Ensures assigned work is performed in accordance with Y-12 APMO requirements.
  • Provides support and oversight of other areas within the Y-12 APMO Operations and Security purview, as requested.
  • Produces high quality written assessment reports with minimal to no revisions.



Job Requirements

Minimum of 4 year Bachelor's of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college in Fire Protection Engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or BS degree accredited by ABET with relevant fire protection experience as described below.

Minimum 10 years' experience as a fire protection engineer (including minimum of 2 years as a senior engineer), preferably at a DOE/NRC regulated facility.

Demonstrated working knowledge and experience as a fire protection engineer.

Demonstrated experience in the design, operation, and/or maintenance of facility related fire protection systems.

In-depth knowledge of principles and practices related to fire protection, including but not limited to:

o National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes

o Fire hazards analysis;

o Fire risk assessments;

o Fire protection assessments;

o Fire exemptions and equivalencies;

o Work packages, job plans, timely orders, and change requests;

o Design packages, procurement, and subcontract documents

o Design drawings, shop drawings, design analyses, calculations, reports, test plans, inspection criteria and results, and similar);

o Nuclear facility safety basis;

o Compliance with applicable fire protection related codes and standards (NFPA,DOE, MSTS, and similar)

Individuals must be able to read and understand prints and process piping diagrams.

Experience at commercial nuclear plant or with nuclear facility fire protection programs

Prior experience with NQA-1 requirements.

Excellent computer skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience preparing and presenting reports, including assessments.

Must be able to secure unescorted access authorization to plant site.

Federal Government Clearance:

This position may require the ability to obtain a government clearance. This position may require reviews and test for absence of any illegal drugs along with a background investigation by the Federal government in order to obtain an access authorization prior to employment, and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
