Montana's largest daily print and digital newspaper and go-to sports website are seeking an ambitious sports enterprise reporter to cover eastern Montana, including but not limited to high school sports in the greater Yellowstone County area, as well as collegiate athletics at NCAA Division II Montana State Billings and NAIA Rocky Mountain College.

This is a full-time position based in the Billings Gazette newsroom, with a 24/7 digital news site and 7-day print newspaper. The ideal candidate will be a jack-of-all-trades, expected to write features, build relationships with local sports communities, cover games, participate in statewide coverage and help manage print page production. We are a digital-first team that prioritizes multimedia journalism, so experience with video, photography and social media is a plus.

406mtsports.com is Lee Enterprises' fast-growing, Montana statewide sports website, and the work from this sportswriter will be an important part of the offerings on this site as well. The work of reporters and editors from five Montana newsrooms - including the Billings Gazette - provide the richest offering of sports coverage in a state that truly is The Last Best Place. That includes coverage on high schools from Billings and Butte to Missoula and Kalispell, NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference teams at Montana universities, a Division II institution and six Montana schools within the NAIA's Frontier Conference. Our model allows reporters the time and opportunity to work on bigger, deeper pieces and chase stories in every corner of the state.

Nicknamed the Magic City, Billings is Montana's largest with more than 185,000 residents. It's located alongside the Yellowstone River and is near iconic scenic areas like the Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone National Park.
