Tesla is seeking a highly motivated, strategic, and forward-thinking Staff Equipment Engineer to help define and execute the future of high-volume cell manufacturing. In this role, you will be instrumental in creating, developing, and scaling advanced manufacturing systems that support the production of Tesla's next-generation battery cell technologies. This is not just an engineering role it's a technical strategic leadership opportunity to drive the end-to-end equipment strategy for some of the most innovative and pioneering energy storage technologies in the world. Lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced manufacturing equipment for cutting-edge battery cell production lines. Drive long-term equipment strategy and architecture, influencing the scalability, flexibility, and reliability of Tesla's core cell technologies. Collaborate cross-functionally with Design, Process, Production, and Controls teams to ensure seamless transition from cell concept to mass production. Work with global OEM and automation partners to deliver high-performance manufacturing tools that meet Tesla's aggressive quality, speed, and cost targets. Manage and develop engineers, creating a strong technical culture of ownership, collaboration, and innovation. Provide technical direction and mentorship to cross-functional teams. Champion bold ideas and breakthrough approaches to push the limits of what's possible in battery cell manufacturing.
What You'll Do
- Develops advanced safety solutions & systems, mentors others, and drives long-term safety culture, in compliance with OSHA, ISO, TUV, NFPA-70E and IEC
- Expert in designing and implementing programs for entire industrial systems, integrating advanced algorithms, data logging, and optimization techniques to improve cycle times and efficiency, proficient in Siemens & Omron
- Leads the design and development of integrated robotic systems (FANUC/KUKA/Epson/Omron) with advanced PLCs, real-time data feedback, and error-proofing mechanisms, expert for PLC motion control and integration for high-speed applications
- Leads the design and integration, calibration and troubleshooting of sophisticated vision systems in multi-step, high-precision processes, proficient with Keyence and Cognex
- Skilled at optimizing pneumatic/mechanical/electrical systems performance, identifying inefficiencies, ensuring reliability and safety under varying conditions (proficient in Bluebeam/AutoCAD/Eplan). Able to manage, develop, coordinate and train maintenance programs
- Leads cross-functional projects RCA, OCAPs, NPI, CAPA, to improve process/product efficiency, integrating automation and predictive analytics. Knowledgeable on (SPC), capability analysis, quality improvement methods (DMAIC, 8D), process change management and process control (PFMEA, DFMEA, Risk Assessments)
- Leads with authority and influence, consistently demonstrating dependability and fostering an environment of collaboration across team networks. Demonstrated experience leading mid-large multidisciplinary teams, mentoring others and creating companywide positive impacts
- Understands Agile methodologies, OKRs, and management of high performing teams. Able to manage 24/7 sustaining-operations. Demonstrates ability to consistently improve/optimize operations regarding safety-people-accuracy-rate-cost
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 8+ years relevant experience in interdisciplinary/integrated engineering, process development, manufacturing engineering
- In-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology including material selection, fabrication, and synthesis; new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis. Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery cell product development is a strong plus
- Proven +5 years of experience working on high-complex automated equipment, and high-speed applications
- Experience with electrical testing equipment (EIS, OCV, Formation, DCIR, Self-discharge and Capacity), in depth understanding of data management, analysis, visualization and interpretation
- Evidence of deep understanding and strategic thinking of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development. Demonstrated capabilities in manufacturing process development for new products and ability to transfer technologies from R&D into manufacturing is required
- Proven ability to successfully manage multiple projects, problem-solving, decision making and capability to meet deliverable deadlines amidst changing requirements, deadlines, and priorities
