Position Purpose
Reporting to the Chief Pharmacy and Laboratory Officer, the Allina Health Pharmacy Director provides strategic leadership and coordinates all retail and specialty pharmacy operations, medication systems, medication safety, and performance measures to ensure that optimal medication services are provided to patients and customers. Manages, coordinates and develops all pharmacy staff, and material and financial resources to project the pharmacies and company into a more productive and profitable future. Collaborates with system level leadership to enhance and grow pharmacy practice across the continuum of care at Allina, with a strong focus on specialty pharmacy strategy and growth. Participating member of the Pharmacy Executive Committee.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership of site and system wide pharmacy operational and clinical services and medication use.
    • Develops and implements departmental strategic plans.
    • Partners with system level leadership on overall pharmacy strategies.
    • Participates in selecting outside resources for needed services or when implementing new programs and ideas.
    • Serves on system-wide and site pharmacy and interdisciplinary committees to plan and implement system initiatives and move pharmacy strategies forward.
    • Directs and oversees changes to improve the service of the pharmacy based on safety reports, strategic priorities, financial data, growth estimates, and patient experience.
    • Resolves next level escalation on any customer service or patient care issues.
    • Ensures controlled substance monitoring and risk-mitigation strategies.
  • Manages employees and holds them accountable for role responsibilities, competencies, individual performance and goals.
    • Supports the recruitment, interviewing, hiring and onboarding process.
    • Conducts ongoing coaching, assessment, training, education and development of leaders and staff.
    • Completes and conducts employee performance reviews.
    • Ensures engagement of employees and contributing to annual department-wide engagement plan.
    • Creates staffing plans that support a safe and efficient medication use process
    • May interpret collective bargaining agreements.
    • May lead or precept pharmacy resident and/or student programs.
  • Accountable for setting and meeting budget and productivity targets.
    • Contributes to optimizing pharmacy related contracts and pricing strategies to maximize profitability and savings.
    • Identifies new business or revenue opportunities
    • Minimizes variance between budgeted and actual results through financial planning.
    • Implements cost reduction opportunities when identified.
    • Provides recommendations for the capital budget and aims to meet finance targets.
  • Coordinates and participates in medication safety initiatives and programs.
    • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies including the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, the Joint Commission, Medicaid, Medicare, the DEA, FDA, HRSA, other regulatory bodies and system policies and procedures.
    • Ensures compliance with all billing and charging practices.
    • Ensures clinical standards and outcomes are evidence based.
    • Provides oversight of formulary and related processes.
    • Participates in systematic approach to pharmacy capital resources such as inventory, management and distribution, compounding systems, information technology and more.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, License and Education

Required Qualifications

  • Specialty pharmacy experience.
  • 3+ years experience at the Pharmacy Director or Manager level.
  • 3+ years with multi-site pharmacies.
  • 3+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Doctoral/Ph.D. level advanced degree in Pharmacy.
  • Strong business knowledge and team development skillsare necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Retail pharmacy experience strongly preferred.
  • Master's degree in business or health care related area.
  • Residency and/or Fellowship.
  • PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration and leadership residency.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Licensed Pharmacist - MN Board of Pharmacy required upon hire.
  • Pharmacotherapy Certification or other specialty area preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Light Work: Lifting weight up to 20 lbs. occasionally, up to 10 lbs. frequently.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $84.99 to $117.59 per hour The pay described reflects the base hiring pay range. Your starting rate would depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, your experience and education. Additional incentives may be available, including discretionary monetary bonuses, goal-based bonuses, and other financial incentives.
