Summary: Brown University Health hospital medicine Business Manager is responsible for financial and operational analysis to ensure quality of services, productivity, revenue generation, efficiency, and service excellence within hospital medicine at Brown University Health. Reports to the Chief of Hospital Medicine and the Senior Vice President of Clinical Services. Recruits, hires, orients, directs, and evaluates office staff. Gathers financial and qualitative data to prepare business and improvement plans. Presents recommendations to department leadership and assists in implementation. Responsibilities: Formulates recommendations for changes as appropriate and presents information to department leadership and other internal and external partners. Prepares written reports and presentations of analysis. Manages operational dynamics that drive key ambulatory and quality performance metrics. Monitors effectiveness of practice operations; recommends changes; implements approved changes as appropriate. Reviews all BHMG employment agreements/renewals/amendments prior to submission to the SVP of Clinical Services and Chief of Hospital Medicine Collaborates with all BUH sites to ensure reports, staffing, projects are standardized and aligned. Assesses needs and opportunities for improvement in all clinical areas. Helps divisions establish productivity, revenue, operational, and service quality goals, and actions to achieve goals. Examines performance of existing department-wide systems and operations to improve productivity, enhance service quality, and ensure optimal use of resources. Reviews financial, operational, human, and technology resources. Seeks input into improvement plans from department administrative and clinical staff. Assists in the implementation of improvement initiatives. Develops business plans in collaboration with hospital medicine leadership for departmental divisions and programs; analyzes projected costs, financing, and reimbursement. Integrates services and functions into organization's primary mission through collaboration, effective communication, and development of high-quality services and programs. Assists with department strategic planning efforts. Participates in the development and implementation of department's annual operation budget and capital budget. Develops departmental and organization-wide multi-disciplinary teams to identify and solve problems. Ensures information is disseminated to staff through staff meetings with minutes, in-service education, and any other means that keeps staff informed/competent. Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Works with department leadership in development and /or modification of policies and procedures. Ensures staff adheres to policies. Provides guidance and education for implementation. Manages recruitment and selection of staff, with input from Human Resources and department leadership. Ensures staff oriented to responsibilities and customer service expectations; and documentation of orientation process and annual training completed. Clearly articulates performance expectations and serves as a role model for professionalism, customer service, respectful interactions, and effective communication. Manages staff corrective action/ termination in collaboration with Human Resources and department leadership. Ensures appropriateness and timeliness of practice activities, including, but not limited to, scheduling, billing activities, accurate insurance documentation, referrals, verifications, and authorizations. Ensures effectiveness and accuracy of billing processes, cash control management, payor authorization and denials. Ensures all activities meet or exceed customer expectations. Develops, maintains, and enhances relationships with staff, patients and families, state agencies, third party payers, and others within and outside of Brown University Health . Serves as a role model for customer service. Apprises departmental leadership of actual and/or potential problems related to regulatory compliance, safety issues, and/or environment of care. Implements action plan to ensure compliance as necessary. Prepares check requests and purchase orders for supplies. Maintains employee files in compliance with Human Resources and Quality & Safety department recommendations. Participates in departmental meetings. Prepares materials for those meetings as requested. Other information: EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree required, Masters level preferred, or related management, business, or healthcare administration. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years experience in healthcare with at least two years of progressive experience in management. Experience in finance management or business administration required. Demonstrated skill in program development, business management and analysis. Management level communication skills; skills in facilitation/consensus building and persuasion. Experience within a large complex organization; must have skills to work across all levels of the organization. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervisory responsibility for up to 5 FTE's.
