Job Description

Argo Group is looking for an Underwriting Manager in Garage to manage a book of business produced by our agency partners in assigned territory for profitability and production. This position will also oversee the technical and operational aspects of book management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, Manage, and Mentor a team of Underwriters, including communicating performance expectations to staff.
  • Foster a team-oriented atmosphere, with independent decision-making and problem-solving, in accordance with delegated underwriting authority and business plan
  • Develop strong, profitable, mutually relevant relationships with agency partners
  • Oversee agency management for assigned territory which should include prospecting agents and participate in appointment and closure of agents.
  • Oversee product line review champion segments within assigned territory
  • Prospect agents and participate in appointment and closure of agents.
  • Travel to agents' locations and off-site events as needed.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process to ensure the organization has the necessary talent to accomplish business goals.
  • Conduct Development Reviews and engage direct reports in developmental opportunities.
  • Establish and manage departmental business processes including setting performance expectations for staff.
  • Maintain consistency in use of the underwriting guide, rates, and forms in order to maintain profitability and achieve business objectives.
  • Liaison with internal/external auditors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of Excess & Surplus multi-line underwriting experience.
  • Clear understanding and vision of the E&S marketplace.
  • Minimum of three years supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent people skills including the ability to mentor key staff members.
  • Effective leadership skills with a sound influence in dealing with challenging situations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced Presentation and Sales skills.
  • Excellent working rapport with wholesale brokerage community.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Advanced working knowledge of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The base salary range provided below is for hires in those geographic areas only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.

Pay Range for Los Angeles and New York: $162,800-191,800

Pay Range for Chicago: $149,100-175,800
