Job Description

Located in Kent Washington, Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace, electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting, passivation, cadmium and nickel zinc plating, chromic, sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies, phenolics, polyurethanes, polyesters, elastomerics, intumescents, lacquers, alkyds, acrylics, dry-film lubricants, powder coatings and Teflon. Current approvals include the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, (NADCAP), Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company, Boeing Defense and Space, Boeing/Philadelphia, Boeing Long Beach, Grumman, Gulfstream, Lockheed Martin, Goodrich, Bombardier, Cessna and Sikorsky among much else.

Founded in 1976, Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012, and became part of the Aerostructures Division. As a defense contractor, Protective Coatings Inc. is registered with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls as a subsidiary of Precision Castparts Corp and is fully compliant with all relevant facets of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and the Export Administration Regulations.

Position Summary:

Involvement in proposed process analysis and approval, current process analysis and preventive/corrective action, process revision analysis and approval as well as product discrepancy documentation and the customer interaction associated with the implementation of internal/customer driven corrective action. Quality Engineers perform a wide variety of tasks. Some may perform highly specialized activities frequently and other duties infrequently or never.

Reporting Relationships:

The Quality Engineer will report to the Quality Manager.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

QMS Support:

  • Develop, coordinate, implement, update, monitor, and assure compliance with QMS policies and procedures.
  • Monitor QMS policies and procedure's effectiveness through teamwork and statistical methods; Recommend improvements.
  • Provide/support training on quality/QMS related items
  • Provide technical guidance to the entire shop.
  • Familiarize and attain proficiency with continuous improvement methods and implementation.
  • Implement and lead quality improvement efforts across cross-functional areas.
  • Support and encourage a positive, compliant, continual improving quality culture
  • Use professional communication with employees, customers, OEMs, and regulatory agencies.
  • Lead and participate in problem solving initiatives.

Nonconforming Product:

  • Review and validate internal and external rejections and scrapped product against drawings, specifications and purchase orders.
  • Disposition rejected hardware.
  • Develop and approve rework plans.
  • Perform trend analysis for rejections.
  • Perform NOEs, disclosures or other customer notifications as applicable.

Document Control:

  • Perform accurate specification reviews and gap analysis.
  • Correctly identify and update all specification(s)/standard(s) touch points.
  • Develop and approve planning operations/process codes and master routes.
  • Perform first run reviews.
  • Maintain and update QMS.
  • Completes customer surveys and requests.
  • Issues and maintains Acceptance Authority Media

Monitoring and measuring:

  • Ensure all tool calibration is compliant with external/internal requirements.
  • Schedule calibration activities with applicable personnel or vendors.
  • Understand, monitor and maintain use of all calibrated tools.
  • Perform calibrations, if necessary.
  • Maintain calibration database.

Corrective Actions:

  • Perform training with supervisors and applicable shop personnel.
  • Issue corrective actions to applicable departments or vendors.
  • Ensure all corrective actions are appropriate and effective.
  • Maintain corrective action database.
  • Provide completed requests to the customer.

Audits:

  • Audit Quality systems for deficiency identification and correction. Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards and that documentation is compliant with requirements.
  • Perform internal audits and maintain internal audit schedule.
  • Support external audits (customer, OEM, regulatory) and provide audit reports as required.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Excel with intermediate skills in other Microsoft Office products.
  • Team player with a proactive, positive attitude and a strong sense of self-motivation, accountability, and responsibility.

  • Ability to rely on experience and judgment to work independently to prioritize and accomplish daily tasks.
  • Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing / processing environment preferred.

Required Experience:

2+ years of progressive quality engineering experience

Level of Education

4-year degree in Business Administration or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent experience

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $80,700 to $121,100 US Dollar (USD) Salaried based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 2X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.

This position requires use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls under U.S. export control laws and regulations (including, but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)).
