Job Description
The Structural Designer 2 must be able to provide innovative packaging solutions in a timely manner. They must lead efforts to ensure the production facility can efficiently produce new designs while acting as packaging subject matter expert for the team.
Responsibilities:
- Develop structural design solutions for paper-based packaging (folding carton, corrugated, rigid box). Experience with non-paper packaging materials a plus.
- Manage design projects and maintain effective communication to sales, customer service, and manufacturing.
- Occasionally (10%) engage directly with client, along with sales business development, as subject matter expert, to obtain project related information.
- Ensure new designs are created for optimum efficiency for production.
- Create high-end, flawless packaging prototypes for customer presentations.
- Create organized, clear, and consistent specifications, dielines, and BOMs.
- Ensure all designs meet customer testing standards.
- Follow direction of the management team to ensure proper design protocols and procedures are followed.
- Be able to interpret concrete and abstract direction from clients, sales and management to develop a solution that exceeds customer expectations.
- Work collaboratively with design team members to identify and develop the best possible packaging solution.
- Support the production facility with preparing cutting die orders, manufacturing layouts, palletization diagrams and press materials.
- Effectively communicate reasoning behind design decisions.
- Maintain clear organization of large ongoing projects involving a multitude of components and revisions.
- Create 3D renderings including conceptual packaging design, exploded-view schematics, and detailed assembly instructions
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in discipline related to role with 3+years of relevant work experience
- Able to demonstrates ability to solve somewhat more complex problems by analyzing variables and applying appropriate solutions learned through experience and proficiency in understanding the job. Must be able to recognize anomalies and critical situations and respond appropriately.
- Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of internal/external customers and/or co-workers at level of detail required to resolve issues of moderate complexity.
- Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge in utilizing Microsoft Windows, MAC, or other technical tools in completing assignments. May require knowledge of or ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.
- Able to demonstrate continued expertise in the primary tools or applications used in completing daily work assignments.)Requires very good communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.
- Must be able to proactively listen to others to understand issues and situations.
- Must be able to clearly articulate business needs to both internal and external customers.
- Very good knowledge of manufacturing equipment, processes, and capabilities.
- Very good knowledge of packaging software with proficiency in AutoCAD, Quark Express, Freehand, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as very good knowledge of prototyping equipment.
Additional Information
RRD's current salary range for this role is $73,200 to $114,300 / year. The salary range may be adjusted based on the applicable geographic location of the hired employee, and the range may change in the future.At RRD, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions may vary based upon, but not limited to education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, shift and location. Depending on the role, in addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in a bonus, commission or incentive program.
