Job Overview:

Under general direction, provides information, data, legal advice, and support for the general counsel and other program areas. Performs work of average difficulty and has considerable knowledge of substantive and procedural law. Provides hands on counsel to all levels of executive staff and assists in protecting an agency's legal interest and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. This class differs from that of the Senior Associate Counsel, who performs work of greater scope and complexity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advises on legal, regulatory, procedural, and/or personnel matters for an assigned department, and assists in the planning and research of special projects.
  • Reviews, researches, interprets, and prepares both written and oral opinions on a wide variety of legal issues.
  • Drafts, reviews, and approves policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other legal documents.
  • May act as a liaison for an assigned office or person.
  • Prepares materials for presentations, speeches, and informational forums.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance on a broad range of employment and labor law issues, including, but not limited to, TEAM Act, ADA, FLSA, FMLA, ADEA, Title VII, workplace policies, discipline, performance management, separations, and all human resource related matters.
  • Represent the agency in TEAM act appeals, handling all aspects of litigation, including drafting pleadings, discovery, motions; attending mediation; conducting witness preparation; and contested trials.
  • Conduct legal research and provide counsel to clients on employment/labor law related matters; actively monitor changes in employment law; and provide advice and review employment-related policies and procedures, disciplinary actions, grievances/grievance processes.
  • Work closely with and advise human resources and internal affairs in relation to employment-related complaints, investigations, and litigation.
  • Provide training, as needed, on employment law compliance and best practices.
  • Attorney will also be responsible for additional legal work supporting other program areas in addition to employment as needed/assigned by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Active License to practice law in Tennessee is required.
  2. 1-3 year of employment law related experience is preferred.
