Your Role on the Team

Performs a limited range of counseling and advice to targeted students. Provides straightforward counseling and advice to commonly-encountered situations independently, but receives assistance for unusual situations. Under the general direction of the DREAM Center director, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of programs and services to engage and support undergraduate and graduate students impacted by immigration status as undocumented or students from mixed-status families at UCI. In addition, the program coordinator is responsible for planning programs and events to help undocumented students address educational obstacles.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
  • Dynamic leadership working with multicultural students and student organizations in a higher education setting; demonstrated success in promoting a strong sense of commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience in working with historically underrepresented and underserved communities, including: mediating, managing and resolving conflicts; facilitating group work; and training students and staff.
  • Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse populations including students from different cultural backgrounds as well as faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and community members.
  • Expertise in developing collaborative working relationships with other campus departments with specific attention to Student Affairs programming units and ethnic studies academic departments; knowledge of programs which enhance and integrate the relationship between Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
  • Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
  • Experience interpreting university policies and procedures and ability to develop, interpret, and implement same.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, multicultural identity development, leadership development, group dynamics, and management theory and proven ability to apply information in decision making and problem-solving situations.
  • Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Ability to prepare documents, reports, publications, and brochures; experience coordinating web-based services. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, evaluate, and summarize data. Advanced content expertise and knowledge of research findings and best practices for undocumented students in: retention, academic achievement, student learning, collaborative learning and group work, identity and student development, multicultural education, and campus climate issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

Preferred:

  • 1-3 years

Special Conditions:

  • Occasionally need to work special events on weekends and evenings

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $28.07- $31.00 (Hourly).
