Corps/Department: Anchorage Corps Community Center

Reports To: Corps Officers

FLSA Status: Full Time/40 hours per week; Non-Exempt

Education and Work Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field (preferred). May substitute substantially similar professional work experience for degree requirement on year-for-year basis
  • Two years of supervisory experience. Prefer direct experience in a Salvation Army or similar youth program planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people


Scope of Position/Essential Functions: The Community Center Coordinator maintains and directs the community center's operations of a broad range of programs such as education, social recreation, arts & crafts, and physical education. Coordinator's primary focus is on facilitating and maintaining community open gym hours as well as scheduling appropriate staff for gym and after school program, The Salvation Army character building programs, and the newly established after-school program. The Community Center Coordinator connects and maintains bridges from community participants to corps programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:



  • Strong organizational, verbal and written skills
  • Group leadership skills including understanding of group dynamics
  • Ability to maintain integrity of confidential materials, communications, and activities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, maintain poise under pressure and successfully communicate with a wide range of personalities
  • First Aid/CPR certification required
  • Learn Kiosk and essential functions
  • Ability to operate computer and various office equipment, as well as audio-visual equipment.
  • Must meet driving qualifications and be authorized to operate a 15-passenger van in accordance with organizational and insurance requirements.


Essential Functions:



  • Plan and oversee administration of community center's programs and activities in support of the center's development strategy:
  • Establish objectives consistent with organizational goals and mission
  • Oversee day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals
  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure conduct, safety and development of members
  • Lead activities and be a positive role model
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to attract new participants and increase engagement in community center programs, while actively promoting Corps functions and services to grow attendance and community involvement.
  • Provide support and training for corps youth programs - such as Sunday School, YPL, outreach, and music
  • Coordinate special events such as the Harvest Festival, Rally Day, camps, youth retreat, VBS, and others
  • Participate in all youth leadership planning meetings
  • Supervise and support volunteers and staff, ensuring clear communication, effective delegation of duties, and a positive, productive working environment.
  • Support Christmas assistance programs, including the Adopt-A-Family initiative and Red Kettle Campaign, by coordinating logistics, engaging volunteers, and assisting with program execution.
  • Oversee the execution and compliance of facility rental agreements, ensuring all terms are met, proper documentation is maintained, and community center policies are upheld.
  • Provide administrative and operational support to Corps Officers and staff, assisting with daily tasks, coordination of activities, and overall mission delivery.
  • Conduct interviews and participate in the selection of new employees and volunteers, ensuring candidates align with organizational values, qualifications, and program needs.
  • Provide transportation for youth to and from camp and other scheduled activities, ensuring safety and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports for the Anchorage Metro Advisory Board, highlighting program activities, attendance, and outcomes.
  • Statistical Reporting for all programs conducted in the Gym and Community Center
  • Perform other duties as assigned, supporting the overall mission and operations of the community center and Corps.


Software-related Skills: Microsoft Word and Excel required; Lotus Notes, Working knowledge of integrated database applications and ability to use new software programs with basic training.

Protect the Mission: Must complete online course(s) for this area and pass the Background Check required by The Salvation Army for employment.

Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on intermittent or continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull, and reach overhead. Ability to operate a telephone. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to access and produce information from a computer. Ability to understand written information.
