Job Summary

The Division of Research and Knowledge Creation at the Getty Research Institute seeks a technically-sophisticated professional with a background in art history, humanities, or the information sciences to serve as Research, Engagement, and Outreach Specialist. This newly-created role will contribute to the modernization projects of two long-standing Getty data products, the Getty Provenance Index (GPI) and the Getty Vocabularies. Both of these important resources have been recently remodeled or are in the process of undergoing a major system migration that will provide for enhanced research possibilities and continuing growth.

The newly hired specialist will facilitate communication and engagement between research and user communities and the program teams at Getty. The specialist will assist in broadening and deepening engagement with the GPI and the Vocabularies across diverse communities, including humanities researchers, information and cultural heritage professionals, librarians, software developers, vendors, and other art enthusiasts. The specialist will also serve as a spokesperson and advocate for these new products within and outside of Getty.

This is a 4-year limited term position, which will support the Provenance Index and the Vocabularies in establishing a new and sustainable approach to outreach, through a dynamic period of change and new development, which is scheduled for completion in 2028.



Major Job Responsibilities

    Realizes and participates in research and programmatic projects, including conferences, trainings, and technical demonstrations
  • Participates and supports strategic partnerships and other long- and short- term collaborations with arts and research institutions and communities, locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Facilitates and tracks communication between the community and the core development team, including identifying needs and new possibilities for community development and research opportunities.
  • Fosters communication and collaboration across the departments and programs of the Trust, which sustain and use the Getty Provenance Index and the Getty Vocabularies
  • Represents program initiatives and projects at public and private symposia, panels, workshops, and seminars, locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Contributes to the development of the product websites and documentation, and to continually expanding and improving the documentation, training, and outreach materials
  • Develops a broad network of local, national, and international contacts related to provenance research, authorities and standards, and the wider linked data community
  • Researches, presents, and publishes own scholarship, with special attention to rising developments related to the Getty Provenance Index and the Getty Vocabularies
  • Assists ongoing marketing efforts and continuous recruitment of new users
  • Establishes and oversees support and communication channels (such as user forums or social media) for the community of users, working closely with GRI and Trust Communications
  • Develops and implements tools and processes that enable the research community to thrive and meaningfully participate in the development of the GPI and the Getty Vocabularies


Qualifications

  • MLIS or Master's degree in art history or related field
  • 1-3 years experience in academic setting, research institute, library, museum, or related organizational context (education may be considered)
  • Working fluency in at least one foreign language is preferred; a programming or technical query language, such as Python or SPARQL will also be considered


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Communications Skills
    • Excellent writing and editorial skills; a writing sample will be requested from finalists
    • Ability to communicate complex or technical ideas and processes through clear, plain, and understandable language
    • Awareness of the media landscape, including social media
    • Experience conducting trainings and developing education materials is highly desirable
  • Domain Knowledge
    • Awareness of art history, art terminology, and library or museum environments
    • Experience working with provenance research or authority resources is highly desirable
  • Technical Knowledge
    • Ability to work across file formats, an awareness of data interoperability standards and diverse data structures; or a willingness to learn
    • Capability and resilience to navigate within an advanced computing environment, which may require building familiarity with specialized terminology and processes
    • Experience in writing or editing technical documentation is highly desirable
    • An understanding of Linked Data ecosystems; or a willingness and aptitude to learn
  • General Skills
    • Demonstrated ability to build long-term relationships, collaborate and direct teams across disciplines
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating empathy, engagement and enthusiasm
    • Ability to set and meet deadlines for oneself
