Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks a motivated and knowledgeable assistant registrar for a limited-term position, ranging from four to six months, to provide support in exhibition loan activities relating to architect Paul Revere Williams. The archive is co-owned by Getty and USC, comprising approximately 35,000 plans, 10,000 original drawings, blueprints and project diazotypes, hand-colored renderings, vintage photographs, correspondence, and other materials. Tasks include assigning item-level accession numbers, creating and entering metadata in TMS object records, measuring, pulling and rehousing objects following archival standards, tracking object movement during the loan assessment period, and other loan duties as assigned. Reports to Senior Registrar. This is a 5-month, limited term position.

Located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Getty Research Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing understanding of the visual arts and their histories. Serving an international community of scholars, the Research Library is one of the largest art and architecture libraries in the world, with holdings of more than one and one half million volumes. Special Collections include rare books and journals, rare photographs, prints and drawings dating from the 15th century to the present, architectural drawings and models, art multiples, film, audio and video recordings, digital content, and extensive archives and manuscript collections.



Major Job Responsibilities

    Follows accessioning procedures to create item-level object records in TMS
  • Pulls items from collection and rehouses in archival standards following best practices
  • Ensures accurate documentation and tracking of collection objects
  • Works closely with Curatorial, Conservation, and Exhibition teams to facilitate loan process


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in art history or a related discipline
  • 1-3 years of experience in registration, collections management or a related field
  • Library experience desirable


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in handling large format, rare, fragile, or brittle materials preferred
  • Knowledge of TMS, other data/digital asset management system, or Crystal Reports software
  • Careful attention to detail with a concern for accuracy
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage competing priorities and multiple deadlines
  • Strong reading comprehension and writing skills to effectively correspond complex information in a variety of circumstances
  • Demonstrated ability to apply policies and procedures consistently and to seek direction when appropriate
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact courteously, professionally, and tactfully with internal and external entities
  • Proven ability to handle confidential material with discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment
  • Ability to climb industrial ladders to access collections and maneuver book trucks up to 40 pounds
  • Means of transportation to work at the Getty Center and an off-site Annex, approximately 30 miles to the north
